We have a VERY large camelia on our property. It's the size of a decent tree and needs to be trimmed to accommodate certain renovations (it is near the front porch) and also to get it under control a bit.
treedimensional - how do you best recommend trimming it? We are going to hire someone, but aren't sure if it should be "canopied" or some other way. We love it and want to keep it, but need a way to get it under control
We are about to embark on a major camelia downsizing also and I found some pretty good posts on gardening forums as well as some youtube vids on it.
We have three large plants and i want to downsize to one medium sized camelia, transplant another to a different spot and off the third (we don't have anywhere to put a third one). This is my 4th of july project. I'll let you know how it goes, but I'd be interested in tips as well.

You can reduce or thin it, and you can tie or truss it during construction. You can also google how to prune camellias and get tons of great info. If you haven't hired the person yet, I'd try to find someone locally who specializes in pruning trees and shrubs. You could contact your local extension office, botanical gardens, or master gardeners to start.
great to hear! I love them, and we want to keep it - but it is HUGE. We have another one that is smaller and manageable. I look forward to hearing how it goes.
lb2006: does it bloom? Ours don't really produce many flowers and I read that neglecting to prune it can cause it to not flower. I'm hoping that we get blooms someday...
yes! it's lovely! although i am guessing it may bloom more if we prune it. We bought our house a year ago & decided to let everything bloom for a year to see what we had before starting our reno, etc.

Now is that time!
If you're ever in doubt about what you've got growing in your yard, just post pics. Someone here will know!
