I don't have any advice but I'm curious what other people suggest. I got laid off on Monday and am struggling to figure out where the hell to start. I haven't had to job search in 6 years. The little research I've done is completely overwhelming.
start with monster.com. Don't just look there, post a resume. I got my job b/c my employer found me on monster. DH will go update his on monster once or twice a year and inevitably the headhunters start calling and emailing.
your area might have a local job posting site, I know mine does. See if you can google and find something like that.
If he is in an IT related field, he can use dice.com
get his information updated on Linked In. I have headhunters contacting me through there asking if I am looking for a job.

It is obviously industry specific, but I regularly check usajobs, my state government equivalent of usajobs, and indeed.com. I also look on the websites of professional organizations subscribe to several blogs dedicated to publicizing job postings in my field.

In addition to higheredjobs.com, idealist.org, indeed.com, and usajobs.gov, I also like looking at my state jobs website (since state jobs often pay very well.) Also, I recommend googling the best companies in your area / industry that do well by their employees and going directly to their websites to see what they've posted there directly.

I have had other friends contacted about jobs because of LinkedIn but that has never happened to me before. I have a pretty solid résumé and my LinkedIn profile is comprehensive and professional. Am I doing something wrong? I'm sort of wary of monster/career builder due to all the WAH scams and commission based stuff that is usually on there.
OH and FTR the right answer here is to both get new jobs in an awesome city somewhere other than your current state. Like, ride off into the sunset far far away!

monster.com is where I saw the listing for my current job. I got my job before from craigslist.
Also, I don't know about your field, but I'm a member of a professional group and they post job listings on their website. Or I just go to other company websites and send my cover letter/resume.
