How soon to follow up to a job app?

I applied for 2 jobs Tuesday. Is it too early to send an email follow up? I said in my cover letter that I'd follow up at the end of the week, wasn't thinking Monday was a holiday (Canada).

What do you mean by follow up?

Follow up to make sure they were received, and to confirm how interested I am. One I dropped off, but the hiring person wasn't in to speak with, I thought I should email. The other was sent by email, per their request.

Are follow ups not good? I won't call or show up, that's annoying, but I thought an email would be appropriate?
