A 16-year-old beauty queen embroiled in a race row over whether she was "native enough" to be Miss Fiji has lost her crown with organisers now claiming she was too young to compete.
Pageant officials were forced to delete hundreds of comments from the Miss Fiji Facebook page in April after Torika Watters, a schoolgirl of mixed European/Fijian heritage, was selected last month, Stuff reports.
Ms Watters said she was shocked by the comments, saying "I am proud of my identity as Fijian and have never considered my people as racists".
She said pageant director Andhy Blake told her that her title was now being revoked because Julia Morley of the British-based Miss World organistion said 16-year-olds could not enter.
But Miss Watters said she was not aware of the age limit when she was asked to participate and was upset by the "lies, the deception, the lack of transparency and the lack of professionalism".
Runner-up Koini Vakaloloma has replaced Miss Watters as Miss World Fiji and will represent the country at the Miss World contest in Mongolia later this year.
