I am truly dumbfounded there are grown women who actually avoid the news, but I see I am in the minority. toledo- can you come here and reassure me all women don't become too delicate to watch the news after giving birth?
I have a general idea of what's going on. I just don't watch the local or national news on tv. I can read a news story - like the referee who was killed in Brazil, or banking accounts being raided in Greece - but that doesn't mean I want to see any video footage of violent news stories -especially those involving kids.
Ours doesn't, and this exact same thing happened here back in May to a family I know well. It's horrifying and traumatizing, and if you can handle the Washington Post article it really is a very, very necessary read to understand why these things happen and who they happen to. Essentially, most of the time these are very good, very responsible parents who legitimately think they've dropped the baby off with their childcare provider. It can happen to anyone.

I have to wonder how difficult it would be for carseats...or cars themselves, to have some kind of sensor and alarm if there is someone sitting in a seat with the car off. My car beeps like a maniac until I buckle the passenger side seat if I have so much as a gallon of milk sitting there. I am from Florida and this was just so common down there, it is heartbreaking.

FWIW, elle, I stopped watching the news about 10 years ago, so it was long before I had a kid. I still manage to stay abreast of current events. Thanks, GBCN!

But it's $70, and I'm sure no parent thinks, Hey, I'd better get this, I'm *totally* going to leave the baby in the car someday.
Yea, you are right. I just mean something that could be in all cars and/or carseats (however they could work that out). Because this kind of thing really does happen to good parents every single day. There are cars with on board vacuum cleaners...this would be a great feature too.

I will likely buy something like this for my car and for DH's. it's not a thought of leaving the baby in the car. It's an "accidents happen" kind of thought. I would rather be judged by the people who think its silly to buy that thing than end up with a dead kid because I got distracted.
I'm pretty sensitive about stuff like this. I had a dream once that I left my dogs in the car and went on vacation. I got back to the airport and went to my car and they were dead. It was horrific. I woke up sobbing. That pain and fear was maybe a one hundredth of what I am sure I would feel if my kid died in his/her carseat because of me.

You should read the Wash Post article that was posted. It goes into pretty good detail about why an alarm system hasn't become a requirement. Interesting and sad all at the same time.

Our daycare doesn't call. H and I have always texted/called each other as soon as we drop him off & let the other know how it went. I've always been terrified of this so that has been our routine.

I gave birth 8 weeks ago and watch the news more now. Especially if it involves children. It's upsetting to hear but if there is something that can be done differently on my end to keep her safe I want to know about it.
Since this is a fear of mine I put my purse on the floor by the carpet with the keys (we have a keyless ignition) and my phone in it. I can't lock the car with the keys inside, can't unlock my house without them and I know I'd notice not having my phone with me pretty quick. The baby is a) new and b) sometimes with DH so I don't trust that I'd notice her missing right away. Especially if I'm in a fog.
In the news up here, a little girl climbed in the car without her parents realizing and somehow got stuck in there. She died. So now we will start locking our vehicle in the garage. I never considered that before.
