More to the point, I hate when you're stuck in the middle of a book that you're really not enjoying but you have to finish it on general principle. Ugh.
I'm reading Hemlock Grove. I watched the Netflix series and thought it was pretty good. A little uneven in places, but enjoyable. So when I saw that it was based on a book, I was excited, thinking it might fill in a few things that didn't quite make sense.
The book SUCKS. Like, seriously. If anyone else watched the series and was thinking of reading it, I'll save you the trouble. Don't even bother. It's a shame, because it's surprisingly intelligent in places, but holy hell does this guy need an editor. The sentence structure is just deplorable. I'm talking about phrasing that's so awkward, you have to read it three times in order to parse it properly.
This is the problem with e-publishing. SOME PEOPLE NEED EDITORS.
It makes me sad, because I think this could have been a good book otherwise.
I used to power on through books like that but now I just skim to see if it gets better and if not, I move onto a more interesting book.
I don't know why I can't just do that. I think it's something akin to the perversity of rubbernecking at a grotesque accident scene. I just have to KNOW.

Well, it's okay now, because I finished it. I need to choose my next book carefully, because if it turns out to be disappointing too, I'm going to be very depressed.
When I read two bad books in a row I tend to go "off" reading for a while. I don't think I've picked up a proper book in a year and a half. (Okay, maybe just a year, I read the Bloggess' book)
This is so embarrassing. I shouldn't even posted about this. I'm so embarrassed.

Ha! I've read that series. I managed to get through it OK. Really though, the books should have been 7, tops. 12 (13?) is way too many. I've tried twice to read Kingdom Come and omg.. snoozeville.
Oh thank god you understand.
I am on 9. I flew through the first 7 in a couple months, but I hit 8 and it's taken my over a year to chug through the last 5.

Even worse is when it's part of a series so you feel compelled to read them too.

I can't remember what happens in that one.. But I seem to remember them picking up again over the last couple. Once all the plagues and shit start happening, I think.
I got bored after the main guy's second wife dies and they're trying to figure whether or not she was a traitor. Then they started introducing all these characters that I just didn't give a shit about.
