They like it at 74 but I prefer about 76. Even then the ac has to work nonstop since its gets about 100 in the summer. When our ac went out it got to 100 in the house and I had to stay here waiting on the repair guy. Cold ice packs on my back and a fan blowing directly on me was the only way I survived.
We don't have AC, but it rarely gets hot enough here. We try to keep the bedroom cool by keeping the curtains dawn, windows cracked open, and a fan on during the day, but it's not unusual for it to be in the upper 70s in our room at night in the middle of summer.
I have no idea for babies, but I would imagine that if you are uncomfortable then they certainly will be too. Less clothing and a fan might make it work though. You'd have to talk to your pediatrician about a specific temperature not to be exceeded.
Ok I'm feeling better about it. She sweats a lot so I know she can regulate and I don't guess it will get hotter than the outside temp. We can handle 1 night at 80. It is at least blowing for circulation, although it hasn't stopped in hours so its starting to irritate me because I'm thinking of the cost. Whatever. It's just one night right?
1) have you tried leaving it off for several hours? Sometimes parts freeze (because it is cold) and need to thaw out. 2) does your thermostat have a fan setting? That'll let the air circulate without running the ac unit. 3) when was the last time you had it cleaned? I've cleand the outer coils (cooling coils i think theyre called. You can buy an aerosol ac cleaner and tuning fork at the hardware store) myself before and it made a huge difference. Inner coils (whatever they're called) are hard and I would call a pro.
We keep it low at night at about 68. I also run a ceiling fan. But h and I are both sleeping furnaces and h sweats the whole night! During the day its usually off and we are more eco friendly and hqve energy saving window coverings and leave them closed when we are gone. No kids. Eta we don't run it durng the day because the house stays cool.
Our house typically stays pretty cool too. We are completely shaded and have few windows. I complain that its too dark but staying moderately cool is a plus.
Ok I just turned the cooling unit off. The outside temp is down to 80 now so we should be fine. I turned the fan on which does basically nothing for a breeze, but its much quieter so I feel less like my bill is going to be a million dollars for nothing. In a few hours I'll try turning it back on and maybe that will do the trick.
We've never had it cleaned. We did do the 1 year free maintenance check up that came with it so that was 4 years ago. Maybe they did it then? We have a pro coming tomorrow. He does the work for the restaurant we work at and will give us a good cash price to get it working. I hope.

Outside it says the temp is around 68 degrees. Inside my house: 82 degrees and humid. The air is so stagnant in my apartment because they designed the complex for units to be stacked in front of the other, not allowing any breeze to pass what so ever. Our a/c unit sucks...it'll only blow out about 15 feet before the hot air attacks it and dissipates. This is where the worst of my insomnia comes out because it's so difficult to sleep when fans can't do shit. I feel so horrible for my cats. They're laying in front of fans and just not getting any relief.

That's probably the problem. I'm sure a condenser wore out or something like that. We have a maintenance plan and get it checked out before the heating season and before the cooling season. That way they catch issues before they happen and we aren't stuck in crisis mode. I think you should get it looked at at least once a year.
Lol, it's really nice! We sleep better when it's cold, but it doesn't normally go down to 58 in the house- maybe 60-62. Sometimes I crack the window open in our bedroom too.
But it does make getting out of the bed difficult.
My AC is fixed! My girl and I are bathed and showered and basking in it right now. It was the capacitor and I gave him $100. So could have been worse. Now I know we can survive 79-80 but I prefer not to. I think I'll compromise and set it to 75 tonight.
Also people - check and change your filters! We totally forgot about one, and it was DISGUSTING. Our coils were freezing and the unit stopped working, but it's perfect again now that we changed the filter.
On topic - I set to 76/77 during the day (I work from home), and 72 at night. We have an old house with no insulation however...any warmer and it's miserable.
