I am predicting that I won't feel completely ready to move on when I'm done with my boxing 101 class.
After this, you move into classes where not everyone is a beginner. I can barely keep up now. I'm a decent 'boxer' wrt the details and knowing what to do, but I'm slow and not very powerful. I also wimp out on a bunch of the cardo, ab and leg stuff.
I'm thinking about doing two months (3x per week) of personal training... then transitioning into the intermediate classes.
I was telling my partner about this yesterday and she asked if I wanted to do 'semi-private'(?) training with her. I guess it cuts down the cost a little bit when you both show up for the same time slot together.
I like this idea, and I like her, but there is a part of me that wants to actually work with the trainer. Not another person with the same skill set as myself.
for example - I want to punch the trainer's mitts. In class, we use a partner and it's like the blind leading the blind.
On the other hand - I'm definitely nervous to put myself in a situation where I'm the full focus and taking 100% of the comentary. That part will be rough...
I can't really do a mix of private/semi-private bc I don't have a bunch of time slots available to switch around. if we agree on a slot, it will become "our" slot.
I'd imagine the trainer could box with one of you while the other is instructed to work on a machine, cardio or bag. Maybe give it a try and see how it goes.
Can you try the semi- private for a couple weeks? How many sessions do you need to buy up front?
I'm cheap, so that's what I would do. Then if you don't like it, go the private training route?

Can you just keep taking boxing 101 over again until you're ready to move on ?
ETA I would get a membership and keep taking 101
but then I would be paying $155/month... and if I was paying the $55/month to join the gym, I should actually utilize the classes, which would advanced of 101.

(side note: there are no machines... they just make us do crazy stuff with our own body weight, medicine balls, or other heavy shit. haha)

and on our last day - we have to hit the heavy bag with flurries for 2 minutes w/o stopping. get a minute break, then hit it with alternating punches for another 2 minutes.
we practiced this last night. I couldn't do the second set all the way through, but I know I'll be able to do it by the end of the month. I was really close.

This sound like so much fun. I'm going to try boxing once DS2's schedule regulates.
I hired a trainer this spring for kettlebells. I LOVED it. I wish I had the income to keep it up. The focus on you is a good thing. Plus they watch your form for corrections, encourage you when you need it etc. I got so much out of it.

I think you are trying to accomplish "too much." And that you are pushing yourself to meet some goal of what you are "supposed to be" doing. You are making progress simply going there several times a week now. I'd just re-do the 101 class and pay the $55 for the membership so you can workout on your own as you need to.
Working directly with the trainer one-on-one will be so much more beneficial. I didnt' realize how much more I could get out of a crossfit class before I did the personal sessions. I'd go for the one-on-one.
If there are defined benchmarks for passing 101 and you meet them, go to the next class! I get that it's intimidating, but I'm sure that they create the benchmarks as a way to determine who is and is not ready to advance. Don't psych yourself out -- they know more than you about what's coming next, and if they say you're ready, then you're ready.
Could you move to intermediate and then repeat that one if/as necessary?
The intermediate goes forever, unless you decide you want to spar, or get training to actually fight. I don't want to do either.
so there are ppl in the intermediate who are really good boxers, they just prefer to stay there.
and really - that's as far as I'll ever take it as well. I'm not interested in what comes after that.
My partner wants to do early morning and I want to do M/W/F afternoons... so this may end up being a non issue. I'm just going to tell her when I'm doing it and if she wants to work around my schedule, I'll just deal with it. Hopefully I'll get some one-on-one time either way.
