About a year and a half ago I purchased a Hoover ALYX bagless cylinder vac that is about dead (see pic). I can use it for 3 minutes before it turns off because it is over heated, so I have to wait about 30 mintues to use it again.
What do you have and do you like it? We have hardwood floors and 1 large area rug. We also have a small 25lb dog that tends to shed.
Can I do the opposite and not recommend our vacuum? It's a dyson, it's crap, it's noisy and it doesn't really pick up all the bits of fluff from our carpets...
Though I did have a small reusable bag one once that was dirt cheap (excuse the pun...) and was great - very light, good suction... think it was a kenwood... something like this:
I had the same issue with our vacuum, and once I washed all the filters (there are 3 or so, the hepa and then 2 other ones) it never overheated again. If you haven't tried that yet, it's worth a shot. Wash in the sink until the water that comes off is clear, let it dry for AT LEAST 24 hours, and replace.
I think (not sure, never really remember brands) the one we have now is a Philips. I'm okay with it, nothing spectacular, but as long as I empty/clean it on time, it does it's job.

We have an iRobot, it's the self-vacuuming vacuum cleaner. I like it. We take all the loose stuff out of the room, turn it on, go in another room and only have to check on it when it beeps. We also have an old vacuum that we only use on special surfaces.
We have an Electrolux Gazelle. Its not a very expensive vacuum cleaner because we were broke when we ordered it, but it needed to be a HEPA filter one because my son is allergic to Household dust mites. This is the best freaking vacuum cleaner I have ever used. It is not heavy and it sucks really well. (This is the one - www.amazon.co.uk/Electrolux-Z4730AZ-Gazelle-Cyclonic-Upright/dp/B003Z0CKBE)
