For my mom's 50th birthday, my mom, sister and I are doing a girls' 4 day trip to NYC! They've been once before, I have not. We're staying near Times Square. Any suggestions on places to eat or must-dos of things to see? We like to eat and shop and will probably see a show

If your not particular about what show you want you an get theatre tickets day of the show half price at the tdf tkts booth. There is one in time square but the one at south street seaport doesn't sell out a fast (well according to friends who actually live in NYC). I would get there well before opening. Like I said, it's great if you don't have your heart set on a particular show but when I went there were a lot of shows available. Not the show I wanted but it was newer and sold out.
Don't eat in Times Square ... the restaurants are all crappy and overpriced. Ninth Avenue (walk west toward the Hudson River) has lots of good places ... I like Room Service (Thai).
Shake Shack has great burgers and hot dogs if you want a quick, cheap meal. Grays Papaya hot dogs are a must (several locations - I like the one on 8th Street and 6th Avenue in the Village). Another cheap place in the Village is Pommes Frites.

absolutely skip all food in times square. the tkts booth in south street seaport is much much less crowded than ts too plus, to me who avoids times square like the plague, it's much nicer at the seaport. as for must dos or places to eat-that depends. what's the tastes adn budgets? you could always take your mom to the russian tea room for birthday tea-it's a spectacular place.
