DH is at a meeting right now and they are probably going to block the expansion of a house because:
1) one person on the committee *personally* dislikes the objectively inoffensive color (note that this person doesn't even live in the neighborhood in question so he will never see the house. But the color is "a dangerous color.") and
2) The expansion is stucco. The rest of the house also happens to be in stucco. Every house in that neighborhood was stucco when built. Most still are.
He got there two hours ago. They are arguing about the second house on the agenda (Well, the color and stucco on the second house).
Oh no. This isn't a HOA. It's the entire 9,000 person town. You have to get town approval to put up a fence or plant a tree. Or cut a tree. Or practically breathe.
Years ago the planning commission in my town blocked Target from putting in a store because they wanted to keep it a small town(stupidly). So Target put the store in a town over. But now they are all pissy that everybody drives the 30 minutes to the town with the Target. My town is loosing a shitton is tax revenue and we all have to drive 30 minutes to get to decent stores.
I think most planning commission members are inducted with the stupid stick.
I went to a town meeting thinking I would get a ballot, vote, then leave. Oh no. Each item was read aloud followed by questions, like what us the exact number of the squad car the police are replacing with money they are moving around in the budget. A few needed actual counting of raised hands while others everyone just said "ah!"
Four hours later the vote I went for was up. It was #10 on the agenda. Stupid old people spent more time questioning $1500 moved around in a budget to replace the dishwasher at school than the $400,000 agenda item to fund art and sports for the year (though at that point everyone was just done and they had no chance).
