I don't know (I think I would hide the statuses) but if he is aspiring to 'live up' to the likes of North Korea and Iran me thinks he is missing the point...
"Sometimes, when I'm eating large plate full of tasty, nutritious food, exercising my ability to speak freely about our government, watching an accused individual be afforded due process, voting in an election, hearing about a woman who voluntarily married a man who is kind to her and didn't demand a dowry, and generally enjoying my freedom, sometimes I sigh and think, Gosh, wouldn't it be nice if we could be just a bit more like North Korea or Iran!"
But yeahno, I wouldn't bother engaging. FB debates are almost always a waste of time.

Hope you don't mind, but I'm saving this for when this or a similar post comes across my feed. Oh, I k'now it's going to happen. It's just a matter of time. And you said it so much more articulately than I could have!

yeah, I had this show up in my feed the other day. It took a lot of effort not to respond. I just defriended the guy since he posts stuff like that pretty often.
You don't get a DL in most states. I wish they did so illegals would have insurance, but alas that is not the case.
Also why list 7 years? That's just weird. I'm also not sure what healthcare they're talking about except ERs which is really pretty marginal as far as healthcare goes--sure you can wait 12 hours and get your ear infection fixed, but it's not like you can easily get chemo for free.

Actually you don't get any of the things mentioned. They don't get "free healthcare" any more than you or I get free healthcare. They can go to the ER and get treated for emergency situations, but they'll still get billed for it. If they choose not to pay it, well, lots of Americans do that too. I don't think that refusing or being unable to pay a bill is quite the same as getting something for free.
ETA: "education" is the only thing on that list that is basically true. I'm pretty sure that public schools have to admit all children, regardless of their immigration status. But you'd have to be stupid, shortsighted and cruel to be against this.
Here was the convo (actually fairly respectful, but...yeah):
Me: Sometimes, when I'm eating large plate full of tasty, nutritious food, exercising my ability to speak freely about our government, watching an accused individual be afforded due process, voting in an election, hearing about a woman who voluntarily married a man who is kind to her and didn't demand a dowry, and generally enjoying my freedom, sometimes I sigh and think, "Gosh, wouldn't it be nice if we could be just a bit more like North Korea or Iran!"
Him:
And sometimes when I am working 60 or 70 hours per week to pay my taxes and support my family, or remembering the time I spent earning my right to citizenship in this country by fighting her enemies, I think "gee, isn't it nice that other folks can come here illegally without doing anything to better this nation for free?". Hell lets just reward them for their efforts. They did such a good job bettering their own shit hole countries, they can only improve ours, right. But what do I know, I'm just a dumb, conservative American veteran from a flyover state.
Him: And I think some of those Koreans worked to better their lives by standing up their repressive governments. I trudged thru the mountains with several of them.
Me: And sometimes when I talk with kids who were brought here at four years old by their mothers who were being battered and had nowhere else to turn, and see them working 60+ hours a week to help support their families while going to school full-time so they can someday become a doctor, and hear them tell their employer to PLEASE take taxes out of their paycheck, and see them fighting for the human rights of citizens of this country and elsewhere while being denied their own basic rights, I want to cry at the thought of such great AMERICANS, at such great HUMANS, being denied their chance at citizenship because of something their parents did when they were still too young to know what the hell was going on. Get to know a few undocumented kids, Ryan - I think it might open your eyes a bit.
Him: Go visit these countries and let the same folks pop a couple rounds at you. Maybe see some of these terrible places instead of watching CNN. Immigration is a good thing if done properly, but summarily granting citizenship to millions of undocumented immigrants to get more votes for your boy isn't exactly a noble cause. Go through the proper channels, follow the rules like our ancestors did. Hell, grab a rifle and toe the line, but giving them free ride on the back of people already supporting millions of AMERIAN citizens on welfare is pushing it a bit. But I do have little eyes. Maybe I'm not seeing things clearly.
Him: On a side note, nice to hear from you. Been a long time.
Me: Methinks perhaps you're not seeing things clearly, or perhaps we're discussing two different things. I (perhaps wrongly?) assumed that your friend posted, and you then shared, this link as a reaction to Obama's recent executive order. Is that an incorrect assumption?
Me: And it's nice to hear from you too - it HAS been a long time
Me: Also, in re: the original post, undocumented immigrants can't get driver's licenses in most states, they can't get food stamps, they can't get healthcare (unless they go to an emergency room, and they'll still get billed for that. Whether they choose to pay for it is another matter, but many American citizens choose this route and don't pay, as well). You don't get a place to live without paying for it, and if you're getting child benefits, it's because your child is an American citizen. In re: education, we're only talking primary and secondary education, and do you really want uneducated immigrant children wandering our nation's streets, or would you rather have them be educated to later join the nation's workforce and contribute to our economy? To not want to educate children for their parents' mistakes just seems...well, un-American, frankly.
Him: I see it as further reinforment that the US rewards people taking shortcuts. Sucks for the kids of those parents who made mistakes, but sends a message that illegal behavior will not be rewarded in any way. Regarding American citizens that do not pay for their health services, this is wrong as well, and should be corrected. And no, I don't want uneducated immigrant children roaming our nation's streets. I want them roaming THEIR nation's streets. If no rewards are granted for illegal behavior, be it through their own actions or their parents;, perhaps in the future, people will hesitate to enter the country illegally. Perhaps we should agree to disagree. From the posts I've seen on your wall, I'll never sway your opinion, and I'm set in mine. I respect your opinion and your right to have it. Seems you have done very well for yourself. I'm not sure I could handle the big city life you live. I'll stick with Middle America. Take care of yourself.
His wife: I am in no means throwing my bone into this dog fight... But as our healthcare premiums have doubled in between our 2 kids (23 mths apart) I am left to question why I should have to pay more for my kids to get immunizations so that someone else's kid can go and get them for free, but I cannot since my sweet darling husband (love you babe) makes to much money. Illegal or not, abuse of any system is wrong. There are some people who need these programs otherwise they would not be in place but the ones who abuse it are the ones who give it a bad name.
