On the day my training plan calls for a run & strength training, are there any disadvantages to splitting up the run?
For example, yesterday I had a 3 mile run + strength training day. My gym is a little over 1.5 miles from my house so I ran from my house to the gym, lifted weights, and ran 1.5 miles back home. Is this OK to do once a week? As I progress in my training plan, I would add mileage by running a bit more through my neighborhood before hitting the main road toward the gym. I would think that as long as my other runs are continuous, and of course my long runs are continuous, that this wouldn't make much of a difference in my training plan. What do you think?

I think doing one run a week this way should be fine, especially since your shorter runs aren't really used to build your endurance like long runs are.
I think this is a great way to be environmentally friendly and get your workout in as well. You'll burn about the same number of calories in two 1.5 mile runs as one 3 mile run, and I don't think it will hurt your training at all for your short run once a week. It will also help your body be warmed up for your gym workout.
