It is tacky. Isn't throwing yourself a housewarming party also tacky? A "we just moved in, come see the new house" gathering is fine, but I wouldn't call it a housewarming party.

We will be having a housewarming, and no, I wouldn't dream of registering. H actually jokingly suggested it at Macy's yesterday and I gave him a death glare. LOL.

Where else should you have a housewarming, and who else should throw it? LOL!
I think it is fine to throw the party because, um, who else would (?) but I think you've already got the answer on registering. I've done it for a fake event just to get the discount.

Good point. I've actually never been to a housewarming party, so I am not sure.

Also, what is the difference between a "housewarming party" and a "I bought a new house, come celebrate!" thing?
i feel like a housewarming party is code for "bring me a present!". the latter is just, hey, come over and check out my new digs!
i'd bring a present for both, but a housewarming has always felt obligatory to me.
Hmmm, I wonder if this is common. I'm the type to bring something to a housewarming but I would not expect, nor would I want people to feel obligated to bring a gift. Maybe I'll just have a holiday party instead.

i thought the "housewarming" aspect of a housewarming party was that you were warming up your house with your FRIENDS. to make it homey. i didn't think of it as warming up the house with a bunch of stuff/bread.
also, A) no registry; and B) i'm with tamb on the wine thing.
Not ok. Housewarmings are not weddings, and they aren't gift giving occasions. The traditional gifts are bread, salt and wine; you may get some of these.
This reminds me of the scene in "It's a Wonderful Life" where Martinis are moving into the new house and Mary and George makes a big presentation of of bread, salt and wine.
Mary: Bread... that this house may never know hunger.
[Mary hands a loaf of bread to Mrs. Martini]
Mary: Salt... that life may always have flavor.
[Mary hands a box of salt to Mrs. Martini]
George Bailey: And wine... that joy and prosperity may reign forever. Enter the Martini Castle.
