eek. That's pretty fucked up.
To scare him away from smoking, aunt used to tell her elementary aged son with asthma that he could never smoke cigararettes or pot because it could kill him. Haha He's grown now, and I think he's a smoker. This is lol worthy to me.
But telling your kids they have a sickness... that could be damaging.
H's cousins were raised in a similar manner. Their mom was orthorexic (was trying to cure her cancer with diet, it's sad) and they were raised to believe that sugar would kill them, milk would kill them, meat would kill them blah blah blah. They ate almost nothing but almond milk made by blending almonds and water. The mother passed away while the youngest was still pretty young and the father remarried a few years after that. All five children except for the youngest were the sickliest looking kids and the older ones are still pretty sickly looking as adults even after changing their eating habits.
I know a parent very similar to this. When I first met her and her family, they were gluten free. Since then, she has declared them also dairy free, corn free, rice free, chicken is allowed once a week, they are allowed two eggs once a week, potatoes are too starchy, certain fruits too high in....anything....the woman is insane. She too makes her own almond milk. One of her kids passed out on the ice, and she said it was because it was too cold. The other 21 kids out there were just fine. I work with one of her family members and when questioned, she informed them that doctors said her son had the cleanest blood they'd ever seen. Huh?
I used to visit with her from time to time when at the same functions, but now I avoid her at all costs. I can't converse with her and not tell her she is insane and actually hurting her kids.
When those kids are out on their own, and they find out nothing is actually wrong with them, they are going to go crazy eating all the things they thought would make them sick.
I am so sad for those kids, I cannot imagine thinking myself and all of my family members are sick.= and going to die. That will probably have negative consequences on their mental health if not in the short term, then in the long term.

we were at cookout with them a few weeks ago. Not only could the kids not eat anything that was laid out on the table - that every other kid was eating, they were not allowed to swim in the pool.
So these poor kids sat at the edge of the pool (couldn't even put their feet in) drinking some almond milk and coconut oil concontion while 15 other kids ate everything in site and had a blast in the pool.
I don't see us spending much time with them in the future.

WHAT? Why the pool restriction? Is that also a magical cure?
I didn't quite understand the pool restriction and didn't dare ask. But they did know ahead of time that it was a pool party.

I missed the op, but we have friends with crazy food rules/restrictions for their kids. I feel so bad for them when we are at functions/dinners where other kids are eating regular foods and they're nervously checking labels and asking waiters about ingredients.
