Every year I take the kids to visit my parents for an extended period at the start of the summer. They live near a state of the art gym facility for which I am able to buy a pass.
It has everything I need and I should be able to do my regular work out, but I usually find that I never have quite the same energy or drive as I do at my regular gym. FWIW, I often find this also happens if I try to work out at home rather than the gym.
I realize I'm an extreme creature of habit but I was wondering if this happens to anyone else. It's frustrating because I know I have the strength - my first work out at my home gym after traveling is always kick-ass - but being somewhere else saps my energy.
I lose focus when I'm not in my home surroundings, and that lack of focus results in a lower energy workout. I find that my best 'remedy' for this is my iPod, full of my comfort music, at a very loud volume. It helps me block everything else out.
I find traveling to be tiring and often don't have the same energy level as I do at home. Usually I'm not sleeping or eating as well, either, which certainly impacts my workouts.
We just got back from a week in DC, where I ran every day (between 2 and 5.5 miles). I was able to get up and out the door just fine, even before DH left for work, but I wasn't able to get past those 5-5.5 milers like I do at home. Tried for 6 one day, and thought of 8 for a long run on the weekend, but just.couldn't.do.it. I'm telling myself it had to do with how I'd been fueling beforehand; didn't have my usual standbys with me, so I made do with other things. Obviously, not the same!

This is me too. I usually have to push myself to workout and that's usually just a walk and maybe some simple strength training.
I think I am deluding myself to think I'll be able to get in a decent 10 mile run on a trip to Florida later this summer.
I try to stick to my exercise routine as much as possible while I am traveling. I can exercise at the same intensity as usual, but it feels so much harder. Lack of motivation? I don't know. On the other hand, one of my favorite things to do in a new place is go for a run. It is the fastest way to see things!
I travel pretty often for work and I find it very hard to work out on the road if it's anything else besides running. I usually just slap on my Garmin and head out the door (after of course making sure it's relatively safe in the surrounding areas). I find these runs to be some of my most rewarding.

i was out of town last weekend and had a torturous long run. torturous. i don't travel a lot but if my one recent experience is a good indication of my OOT workouts, i wouldn't be motivated either!!!
