This, or something like it. I'm always a fan of experience gifts.
I was trying to think of something like this. Experiences are fun. I don't know how much the parents would be into that though, unless we take them, but that's scary.
For Abby's fifth birthday, the top toys were my little pony, a large horse, Disney princess stuff (of course), and Hello Kitty. Strawberry Shortcake is getting more popular too.
For something recognizable but less prevalent than the princess stuff, Fancy Nancy and Pinkalicious have great books, puzzles and toys.
My Little Pony, books, nail stuff, art stuff, etc. Pretty much everything people already mentioned. My 5.5 year old still isn't quite old enough to knit, even though she really wants me to teach her. The strength and dexterity aren't there yet.
My nieces (6 and 4) are into making jewelry like beads and friendship bracelets. And they both love Polly pocket(Polly pocket is so different now!)
Oooooo, maybe some of those Klutz book/kit things?? I loved that stuff.
One of them wanted me to teach her to knit/crochet, but I feel like she might be too young for that still? malarjamz?
I feel like if they are expressing an interest then they're not too young. I would start them with crochet. If you can find it, I used this book/kit to teach myself. I thought it was easy enough to "get".
We go to Costco and check out toys there whenever someone has a b-day or esp for Xmas. They usually have some of the trendy/popular stuff as well as interesting educational toys and books and they have great prices of course.
