I talked with the surgeon. Actually, he was calling my line and it went to vm just as I picked up, so I listened to his message, then frantically dialed back because I'm THAT sort of owner. I'm really happy he came and talked to me, even though his message was explanatory enough.
First, it's definitely a tumor, though he wouldn't speculate as to what kind. It wasn't attached to the muscle underneath, which is good because then the surgeon was able to get all of it. But it means there's a fair-sized incision (which our vet had already warned us about).
So, first hurdle is over. The tumor will be sent out for a biopsy, which we probably won't have the results of until late this week or early next. Then we'll go from there. Pray jeebus it's just a benign tumor and we're done.
Putting up with you? Dont be stupid. Your pup is going through a rough time and so are you! Of course we want to support you. I'm glad the surgery went well and will keep my fingers crossed that it was benign.
What's the next step for recovery? I don't know much about vet surgery----when does he get to come home?

IIRC, the fact that it wasn't attached to muscle is a good sign toward it being benign. I think I remember our vet saying that when my childhood GSD mix had a benign fatty tumor in one leg.

Today! It's outpatient surgery. So we have B's pedi appt this afternoon and then I run to go get Lucky from the vet.
And then the real fun begins. Have you ever tried keeping a working breed dog "quiet" for post-op recovery? AAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA When he was neutered we had to bribe him constantly with bully sticks and marrow bones and he STILL managed to nearly tear his stitches out and liberally destroyed socks in retribution.
I'm thinking this time he's just going to have to be on crate rest for the first few days. Partly to keep him from hurting himself and partly from keeping our other dog and toddler from hurting him.

Glad to hear that he's through the surgery and thinking of you guys while you wait for the results!
And I totally hear ya on the keeping him calm. I'm about 2.5-3weeks into crate rest for the Poe-dog after she sliced her paw pad. We did a lot of crate rest and we tried bully sticks but she just got more insane lol. Lots of pb kongs though. And every time I ran Jack she would just pace the crate (defeating the goal of keeping her off her feet) so poor fabio-dog ended up practically on crate rest too.
I just caught up, sorry you're going through this! We had quite the scare with Mabry a month ago. He went it to have a skin tag removed and had a bad reaction to the anesthesia, which caused him to get mega esophagus and aspiration pneumonia, then when we moved him to a specialist, he bloated. All 1 week shy of the 2 year anniversary of Brunson's death, where I was 7 months pregnant, and there I was, 7 months pregnant again. It was horrible. Thankfully he recovered from everything nicely.
Good luck with the biopsy results! I know Brunson did have cancerous tumors removed from his neck, but I have no idea if being Addisonian contributed to that or not. Prayers for Lucky!
