I am trying to find fixtures for my studio, and have no idea what size to get for my space.
The space is approximately 12 ft by 17 1/2 ft. The ceiling is sloped, with the ceiling height along the 12 ft walls going from 8 ft to nearly 12 ft. It has been wired for 5 overhead lights, and I have a large kind of industrial looking pendant with a metal shade for the center.
I had planned to have four fluorescent fixtures with bulbs that would give a lot of natural looking/true color light, but now that I need to source them, I realized that I have no idea what size(s) I need, or if I should be looking into some other type of lighting. I will have some task lighting as well, but for the most part, I will be depending on these lights over my cutting table/workspace.
I am open to any ideas, except for fixtures that look like they belong in a 1990s kitchen. That was what DH kept showing me last night.lol Function is most important to me, and I really would prefer a more industrial look/feel. I just don't want the super cheap shop lights that take forever to turn on and flicker...I don't mind the look, it's the flickering that bugs me.
I always recommend 3500K, 90+CRI T8 lamps. People seem most happy with them, and they're very good for color rendering.
Were you thinking of a surface mounted linear fixture, or pendant?
Another option could be a linear fluorescent wall mounted uplight, and CFL or LED downlights.
I had been thinking 90+CRI T8 lamps, but have no idea of actual fixtures or whether I need 2,3 or 4 lamp fixtures.
Like I said, the room has been wired for four overhead fixtures, in addition to my pendant lamp that will be mounted in the center. I wasn't thinking surface mounted...especially not on the ones that are on the high part of the ceiling, since I figured the lighting needed to be nearer to the work surface, but maybe my thinking is faulted.
I did wonder about LED lighting, but I don't know enough about it, since I have only seen them in applications like Christmas lights and under cabinet lighting. I haven't seen any in a workplace setting (that I know of).

What does the pendant look like?
I would NOT recommend surface mounted, lol. If you're going the suspended fluorescent route I would suggest 2 2-lamp 4' T8 fixtures mounted at 8'. They should have a direct/indirect distrubution, maybe 50/50 or 70/30 so that you're at least getting a little light on the ceiling.
I would only do LED lights if you'll be adding some recessed downlights. I've been using them a lot recently and they're getting a lot better, but I only spec certain manufacturers and they can be a bit pricy. Another option would be a recessed incandescent and then relamp with an LED.
