Lurker here. I have listened to bits and pieces. I prefer reading the book - the narrator was hard for me to follow. Even DH prefers the books. He's read them multiple times and agreed that the narrator was irritating. Maybe if you start with the audiobook, it wouldn't be irritating? You will probably need to download a copy of the house structures, though. There are a lot of characters.

I am listening to it now. I had problems with my player and got lost in book two, but am back on track. I have to listen to it when I can really pay attention, but otherwise am enjoying it (the narrator doesn't bother me).
I think the narrator is fine, however, the narrator changes for the 4th book I believe. I don't like getting used to one narrator's way of speaking for characters then having a different narrator.
I would read the books for your first time through the series.
