DS is turning 2 and we would like to have a low-key party with food, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and cake for DS. I was thinking of a construction themed party, since DS loves trucks and forces me to read this "Roadwork" book 20 times a day. I'm pretty challenged when it comes to crafty things, but I think I could pull off construction.
My only hesitation is that DS may be the only kid there. I was thinking of inviting one of our neighbors with a 16 month year old, but I'm not sure they would be able to come.
What do you think of birthday parties with themes when your kid is the only kid there?

I think it is fine. Even if he is the only kid there it is still his special day. You don't have to go overboard or anything. Maybe just a cake with a construction theme. Some construction theme plates/napkins, etc.
My neice is 7 and when we have family parties she always gets to pick out the theme. We just get a table cloth, plates, etc. in the theme. I don't mind eating of kitten plates
I would do it. DS2 had theme parties for his first and second birthdays (circus and cowboy) and the only other kids there were his brother and cousins. I still did cupcakes, decorations, food, and favors that went along with the theme eventhough it was just a family party.

Do it! We went to a 2 year old b-day last year where the b-day boy and his sister were the only kids there and the parents went all out. It was cute and not weird at all.
You could decorate really easy. Just get a few Tonka trucks and use them to serve food in. Chips in one, hold dip in another, etc. Then a cute cake and a few construction balloons and you are good to go!
I think the best part about doing a theme for young kids is that 10-20 years from now, you can all look back at the pictures and remember what they were into. Kind of like a "favorites" time stamp.
