this is long, but worth it, and you can FF in a few parts.
apparently, this video of the japan tsunami was uncovered recently. it's insane how quickly it escalates and how fast things get out of control. even if you just watch the first 5 or so minutes, it's just amazing.
I was getting the heebie jeebies just watching it--I'll bet my blood pressure went up. I'm currently in Kodiak which was practically wiped out after the 1964 tsunami (EQ was 9.2 on the Richter). I kept thinking: "how high would I have to run up the mountain here to get away from that water?"
If I had been those people I would have been freaking out wondering if I had gone high enough up on that building.

oh my god. How does everyone seem so calm in that video? I would be in hysterics.
That was my first thought. Everyone is so ho hum about it, I'd be losing my mind.
Exactly this. I just can't fathom going through something like this. It only took a few minutes to go from a little wave to tearing down the bridge and then a few more to houses floating by. Incredible. I would have been worried the whole time that the building I was standing on was going to collapse, and then wondering how in the world I was going to get down. Wow.
I started watching, then hit a couple on the sidebar, then started to view the Indian Ocean tsunamis in 2004... The first one in Thailand showed raw footage including two guys holding each other just feet from the camera being swept away from the hotel into the waves.
Awful. Just horrific. All of it.
I had to check to see how Masawa, Japan was affected in 2011 since my DD1 is headed there Sunday with my grandson. Thank the good Lord it was on the "wrong" side of the island and wasn't affected beyond waves, shocks and power outages. I'd not be able to sleep if I what I was seeing included where my daughter and her family were living.
DH grew up in Tamil Nadu, India & ILs still live there. They own some land on the coast that was a coconut grove (operative word "was") until the '04 tsunami. We're building on it now. Just a few km up the road when I was there back in '09 some people were still living in temporary housing.
