Agree. If I remember correctly, I think this is the last season Mer and Derek are under contract as well.

It's the last contracted season for all of the originals- Cristina, Mer, Der, Bailey, Richard, Alex- but they're supposed to know fairly early in the season who all is coming back. It shouldn't be like the plane crash season where you weren't sure until the last minute if people were signing back on. At least, that's what Shonda has asked in order to give the actors that want to leave a proper send off.

Which in Shonda terms means, "proper time to set up another mass shooting/explosion/flood/ferry crash/plane crash/cancer/plague outbreak/car accident to kill everyone off and say good-bye with a real nice funeral, after which the remaining cast members will sit on grave stones and yuk it up"
