Urban Decay Naked Skin. I used to use a powder (mineral) foundation, have tried many powder and liquids, but UD Naked is the best by far for me. It is lightweight, oil-free, paraben-free and cruelty-free!
For reference, I have sensitive, combo/very oily in t-zone skin. I use the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush to apply it. The UD Optical Blurring Brush was made for that foundation and works great too.
I've worn a lot of foundations in my day, but right now I'm really happy with the Garnier BB Cream for oily/combination skin. It has good coverage without being heavy. That, a little concealer and powder, and I'm good to go!
(In addition to copious amounts of bronzer and eye makeup, of course!)
Does it matter what I use to apply it? Sponge triangles?
Yes, it matters. It depends on what kind of coverage you want, ease and time it takes to apply, the finished look you are going for and also personal preference.
I prefer liquid. I use my fingers or a foundation brush, depending on the day.
My favorite is Prescriptives, which works because I already know my shade, but I think it would be hard for a new customer (they only sell it online now).
My second favorite is actually Revlon. I use the gel color stay,
I do have a decent match with Clinique, but their foundation isn't much better than Revlon's.
There is a definite difference in quality between the high end and drugstore foundations, but I'd rather have a great color match in a decent foundation than a great foundation with an iffy color match.
(For anyone wondering, I'm extremely pale, and lighter than most brands carry).

I have oily skin too and Lancome Teint Idole is one of my favorite foundations. The Revlon color stay previously mentioned is another good one. Believe it or not Avon has an awesome foundation, it is the Ideal Flawless Invisible Coverage. It got a lot of great reviews from several You Tube beauty people and I was very pleased when I tried it. Another one I reach for quite a bit is the Maybelline Dream Matte Mouse. I'm a bit of a foundation whore.
If no budget, Giorgio Armani luminous silk foundation. For drug store brands, I like Almay Smart Shade or Loreal True Match. I apply with a sponge triangle.

I have oily skin and lately I've been loving Almay Clear Complexion makeup and I set it with Maybelline Shine-Free loose powder (there is a loose and compact version). I also like Revlon Colorstay (I prefer the whipped, but it has to be set well with powder or it gets shiny).
L'Oreal True Match liquid foundation and MAC Fluid Fix foundation made me look like a spotlight.
I use bare minerals. I really like it, and it's really fast to apply. For me putting on mascara takes longer than foundation. I use fairly light because I'm really fair and don't tan. It easy to blend and evens out my skin tone and makes me look finished.
If you're willing to go the non drugstore route, I highly suggest stopping by Sephora and trying out their new Foundation matching system. They use this camera thing and it takes a series of pictures of your skin. Then it outputs a code that matches you to every foundation that it right for you in the store. It gave me a few suggestions and the one I tried is so perfect, it's amazing. And I never would have found it on my own.

This was going to be my suggestion too, especially since you're not really sure what you do and don't like in different types of TM/foundation/BB cream yet. My best advice is to get matched at Sephora and ask the sales associate to make you up some samples of several products that will work with your coloring and skin type. Then you can try them out on your own at home over the course of a week or two before deciding what's worth spending your money on.
I've always loved MAC's studio fix in the compact. I try other things all the time and keep going back to it. It works perfectly for me and I can slap it on in no time.

My magic formula has proven to be Tarte BB cream (lightly applied with my fingers) and then a quick swipe all over of the MAC studio fix powder foundation.
I've been using Arbonne primer and foundation. I love it. It's so light and covers great. When I go out, and it's hot and humid, others start looking shiny, but I'm still perfectly set.

I use Pur Minerals 4 in 1 liquid foundations and their green primer for redness underneath it. I like it a lot. The primer helps even out my skin tone a lot. I bought their brush to apply, but it sheds like crazy so I would suggest buying a different foundation brush if you want to apply that way.
For liquid foundation, I use Chanel Perfection Lumiere. For tinted moisturizer, I use NARS
I use this, mixed with a little tinted moisturizer. Primer first.
I was using purminerals and wanted something liquid. I went to a tinted moisturizer and it was too light. I switched to Chanel Perfection Lumiere and it was too heavy. I found mixing the two to be PERFECT. I apply with a foundation brush.
Nah, I don't think you need a primer for everyday wear. I've only ever worn primer when I'm in weddings, lol.
I like Almay smart shade mousse. Natural coverage and not heavy at all.
Then I brush on just a bit of Almay powder and I'm good to go.
I think it also depends on climate. I live in Texas and in the summer, I definitely need a primer if I want my foundation to stick. I don't do it every day, but a couple time a week at least.

I have your exact skin and recently bought Misha perfect cover bb cream. It covers just enough so that the redness is not as noticeable, has spf 42 (which we need) and is good for oily skin. I top it with a touch of powder when I want to look more polished. Love it.

I have very sensitive skin and the only thing I can use is Mary Kay mineral powder foundation (I can only use their skin care too) It's so easy to apply. I know my color match but u could get a consultant to match you or look online if you are confident of your color match
They also have a setting spray that you spritz on so if you get sweaty etc your make up stays nice but it doesn't feel like anything on your face You can carry it around if you live in a very hot humid area and may need a touch up Good luck
