Not that it's a bad thing, but I've never been through a more detailed and lengthy count-off process + safety meeting before going in the water! This was about the first 3 waves of heat 1. There were about 150 or so of us swimming. All the while we're counting off and dreading this moment:
The water was 70* at best, air around 60*. Brr.
Then we were off and doing this:
4 times around the half mile course. The underwater cable meant almost no sighting necessary. It was the most civilized, orderly, rule-governed OWS I've ever done. If you crossed the cable, DQ. If you "interfere" with another swimmer beyond normal accidental contact, DQ. I found 4 DQ's in the results (as distinct from DNF or DNS). Never seen that before in an OWS.
It was an in-water start and finish, between the two neon yellow buoys.
Done: 47:54.80.
I still sort of moved it coming out of the water. Old habits die hard, I'm used to finishing on the beach.
I felt it was a really solid swim. I think I just negative split it by 30 secs or so. (I only glanced at the clock briefly at the 1 mi mark.) If my math is right, that pace puts me on target for a 1:14 or so in my 5k next week. Last year I went 1:20:41 in the 5k, so that would be huge.
Puppy D modeled Mom's winnings. Say hello to your honorary women's 30-34 2 mile national champion (lol). I say that lightly because technically I am, but it's hard to take seriously. I was just the fastest that showed up yesterday. I was the 6th woman overall, and 13th swimmer overall.
Then we took the doggies Derkins swimming. Doggie D plunged in like he was late for his wave start. He is a dog after my own heart. Also possibly part otter.
Puppy D was not so sure.
Momma coaxed Puppy D in,
while Doggie D did the Ironman Lake Placid swim course like 8 times. (I kid.)
Eventually Puppy D got the hang of it. She does not love pure swimming like Doggie D, but she thinks dashing in and out is great fun.
Congrats on a great race & an awesome AG win!! I would have died in those temps, never mind all of that swimming. Love the dog pics! They're both beautiful! Gorgeous pics.
