Hi there. I've been trying to ramp things up a little. Where do you typically start for solving exercise pain? DH says I should just go to the orthopedic surgeon, but I figure there are other suitable (less $$) routes. Do you see a physical therapist? Chiropractor? Orthopedic surgeon? Personal trainer?
My body is just put together all wrong for impact. My hips and back click and pop just walking down the street. :/ I've got scoliosis, bulging discs, osteoarthritis among other issues.
I briefly hired a trainer last year, but she wasn't well-educated about some of my medical problems and aggravated them.
I'm about to get back into yoga, but I'd like to continue cardio without throwing everything out of whack. How would you proceed, as far as expert help? At the moment, it is mystery hip and heel pain.

Do you foam roll? Stretch regularly? Take rest days? If not, I'd take a break from high impact workouts, then ease back in with those things included in your routine.
If you are being proactive about keeping your body injury free, I'd see a sports medicine doctor/orthopedist.
No, I've seen those foam rollers but haven't used one. I'm basically clueless and go through loose routines of fast walking, cycling and yoga until something hurts and I lose momentum.
I can't run per some injuries from having a stinkin 10 lb. baby. Good thing he's cute.
I go see the sports medicine doc to figure out if you have any major problems. Then maybe get a recommendation for a physical therapist that works with athletes.
My first stop would be a spine specialist if you already have bulging disks. They can set you up with a PT or who can work with your limitations and come up with an exercise plan. I would not mess around with my back and start running or get into anything crazy without seeing a specialist first.
Thanks for the tips! When I was dx'd with bulging discs I did see a PT for awhile to help with safe stretches and exercises for my back, but we didn't work out an overall fitness routine.
I'll start searching for a sports medicine doc or chiro. Thanks!

I'd go see a sports med MD to get a referral for PT, but my insurance doesn't cover PT w/o referral from an MD.
the last time I had PT the woman next to me was getting PT for her pelvis/hips/back. she had carried 2 10lb babies 40 weeks and delivered them vaginally and was all kinds messed up. the kids were teenagers; I don't think they let people do that sort of thing anymore. she had initially come for some other injury but her childbirth injuries came to light during treatment for the other injury so she was also doing PT for both. so don't be shy about talking to the sports MD/PT about everything you have going on. they might be able to help.
Vanessa, I'm having back issues again after nearly ten years of being nearly issue-free. Previously I was diagnosed with a herniated disk. I'm going to see my doc to get a referral for PT, which did wonders for me and taught me coping mechanisms for the occasional flare-up. I will probably get an MRI as well to see what has changed to cause me to have problems again.
