I needed this today. Thank you.
I had a tough ride mentally yesterday and it left me feeling really crappy about the whole race. I am trying really hard to move passed it, but it is not so easy.
This guy lives in Quebec or Ontario. He does a lot of the same races we do and he finished right around the time DH finished (Dev was 190th overall and DH was 192nd) at IMLP this year. I've never met him, but he is very well-respected around this area. His comments are dead on. There will come a time during the race that you will hate. Hate the race, hate yourself, whatever. If you give in to that hate, you will miss the point.
Obviously a marathon is no IM (HA! It's only one of the THREE legs), but it reminds me of one of my favorite race signs. Somewhere between mile 20 & 22 of my 2nd marathon, someone had a sign that said, "You've endured the training, now celebrate the pain." Yes, it's hurts, but you're out there doing it and accomplishing your goal. Celebrate the pain, don't give into it. I'm sure that's true x 10 for your IM. You're almost there!!!
I think this is great to keep in mind during a bad training day too! There was one day near the end of my tri training program where I was having a really bad ride - tired, getting rained on, tipped over being clipped in, chain fell off, ran out of water, etc. - where I was seriously questioning myself and my ability to complete the race!
I should also tell you that this guy just did IMLP and IMMT this year - two IMs three weeks apart!! He went 10:47 in LP and 10:51 in MT. He also had some serious injuries from a couple of years ago, but he is a true athlete and made it through.
