I'm the captain of a Hood to Coast team and the race is this weekend. It has been a lot of logistics, planning, organizing, etc. to get 12 runners and make sure they are ready, we have everything we need, we have vehicles, etc. I've been planning for 10 months and was finally feeling like most of the coordination was done and I could focus on getting things ready for the inlaws to watch the kids (who they see MAYBE once a year - a whole other logistical issue). Anyway my sister called and one of our runners is sick. Has a bad upper respiratory cold or something. He tried to run yesterday and could only go two miles before he had to stop. He really wants to do this so he doesn't want to quit, but I think we need to find a back up ASAP. I don't know who could do this with four days notice and needing to be gone for three nights.
UGH! Sorry, had to vent to people who would understand. DH is always so laid back and thinks I'm over reacting.
oh no, that is awful. I am so sorry to hear you have to deal with this!! There is a chance he might be better for race day. Can you call the race organizers--they might have a suggestion, I am sure this is not the first time this has happened? They might even have people who are on stand by or something for things like this--people who could not find a team to join, but wanted to be in the race, etc. Good luck!

I'm hoping so but his wife thinks he should see the doctor, she is worried he has pneumonia. I just don't want to wait until Thursday when we're supposed to leave and then find out he can't do it.
There is a race forum where we could look for a runner. I think I should post there just to see if I can find someone.
I would do that just in case. If you have less than 12 runners, does that mean everyone runs more?
Yep, If he drops out the next runner takes his spot then we continue on in the same rotation. So everyone moves up a spot. That could work but I'm worried about some of our weaker runners (who unfortunately haven't trained enough) then having the harder legs or having to run an extra leg. And people will be having to switch vans, since runner 7 will have to move to runner 6 (van 1) and so on. I'm sure we will make it work out, I just didn't want to be having to plan for this at this point!

The rules say you have to stay in order but I wonder how they'd know. We have some strong runners who could certainly take his legs (or at least part of them) but I just don't know how strict they are on following the substitutions instructions.
I'll definitely come say hi! What time do you start. I know your team will be way faster than ours.
That sucks. Is H2C really strict about the order and switching legs? Despite what they say, I know Ragnar doesn't notice or seem to care if runners switch it up in the middle so that weaker runners can switch with stronger runners to easier legs and vice versa.

As long as you are not a competitive team, I cannot see why they care. Injured runners are really common in these races! Last time I did Ragnar I had to run an extra leg.
By competitive, I mean top 10 in female or male or co-ed. I believe it's top 10 that get re-entry for next yr so yeah, if you use your stronger runners more and someone finds out, they may complain. If not top 10, do what you need to do and have fun. That is our plan. My team was in the top 10 last year but we will not be this year.

Yeah, we will be nowhere near the top 10 The only finish time I'm hoping for is if we finish within 30 minutes of our estimated finish time we get an automatic bid next year.
If you want to fly me out, I'll fill in for your guy
Ha! I wish I could!
My cousin is checking with some friends in Portland. We're going to ignore the substitution rules. If it comes down to it I'll take one of his legs, and we'll split up his others. So I think we have it figured out.

I'm on a HTC team too. On the Official Facebook page people are posting looking for a team or replacements. You might want to start there. I do know that people turn in other teams for going out of order. You play leapfrog with teams all day and people know who they should be matched up with. I don't know why someone would go through the trouble to stand in line a protest, when it makes no difference overall!!! Lame. Good luck!! Have fun.

I can see reporting people if they are breaking rules that are dangerous or detrimental to another team. But otherwise that is ridiculous. I'm not sure how they would know we were breaking the rules though. If we just swap in runners for his legs it will only interrupt those 3 legs. If we follow the HTC substitution rules we'd have different people running the different legs since we're doing an 11 person rotation rather than 12. So you would never be matched up with a runner from another team. If we can't find a runner there is no way we're following their substitution rules. They are way to complicated logistically.
