CNN) -- Gunshots were reported fired at a charter elementary school Tuesday in Decatur, Georgia, a school board chairman told CNN affiliate WSB. No reports of injuries have been made from the Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, board Chairman Melvin Johnson told WSB. Aerial video from WSB Tuesday afternoon showed children leaving the building and being guided to a corner of a field.
(CNN) -- At least one gunshot was reported fired at a charter elementary school in suburban Atlanta Tuesday, but no students were injured, a school spokesman said.
One person who fired a shot at or near Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy is in custody, said Quinn Hudson, a spokesman for the DeKalb County School District. It wasn't clear whether the shot was fired inside or outside the school, located about seven miles east of downtown Atlanta.
Aerial video from CNN affiliate WSB showed children leaving the building and being guided to a corner of a field. Students were being returned to their parents at a shopping center near the school, the station reported.
Yellow crime scene tape marked part of a parking lot and a wall of the school.
Last night at our ice cream social I couldn't help but take in the lay of the school in regards to if there was ever an intruder. That is just fucked up that my mind even had to go there.

My son's school had multiple code black and code red drills last year.
He was in the freaking infant and toddler program. The oldest kids in his daycare and school are four. FOUR.
How in the world is a teacher supposed to protect a room full of scared toddlers if the unthinkable happens? How do they collect infants all sleeping in their cribs and run to try and find safety?
I get enraged just thinking about it. I am so ANGRY that this is the world my child has to grow up in. And I have a whole new level of respect for the women manning the locked front door.
These poor children in Georgia. (I'm getting tired of thinking about poor children being terrorized at school by gunmen...)

I can't with the POS NRA anymore so, yeah, f them.
But, Mr. President, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD reinstate Title IV to be allocation not competitve. All of these schools need to ramp up protection and these haves/have not situations that competitive puts districts into is a crime. Seriously.
Awful. Thank God it appears that no one was hit this time.
Not a great story to read on my kid's first day of kindergarten. I wasn't aware until yesterday that our resource officer is only there 2 days a week. What about the other 3?

I recently sat in on a parent meeting for our on-site daycare. I asked allllllllllll the questions about "what about a Code Black? Will we get a call? I'm not here-here, so I need to know if that does happen on-site that you WILL call me. This is a need-to-know issue"
And schools are expected to pay for their own security (as a part of their budget) so kow they are forced to choose between safety and buying supplies. What can you cut in an already meager budget?
We now have to have drills 2 times a month, one for fire, one for other. Active shooter, natural disaster, chemical spill, etc. it makes me so sad that this is what life has come to.
And I get that when we were kids, there was a threat of nuclear war, but I know I didn't have a nuclear war drill once a month.
I will say that as soon as this happened the police local to us, less than 10 miles from this school, arrived at my sons school and remained on his campus the whole afternoon. They put his school on lockdown, and the kids were locked in their classrooms, but unaware of what was going on, which is good since my son is only in kindergarten. We go to a private school but my neighbors whose kids are at our public school had the same situation, local police on campus, complete lockdown, and they went a step further and turned off the lights in the classrooms and had the kids in a corner, reading them books. They told the kids it was a drill.
I know that no one got injured, but this just hits too close to home. Something has to change.

Did you guys hear this morning that the gunman went into the school's front office and asked they call the news so the could capture him on film shooting at the police? A woman in the Front office talking him out of it( she is a Hero) and at the end he asked that she make an announcement apologizing to the school and he apologized to the police and said he was off of his meds. That certainly does make things interesting and show we have very complex issues here.

When I was a kid all we had to drill for was fire, tornado, and earthquake (and the latter didn't even start until some quack predicted that there would be a massive New Madrid Fault Line earthquake on a particular date... this was back in the 80's and it hasn't happened yet...).
I really hate the world that I brought my daughter in to.
Do you think if this kid looked like Trayvon that he would have survived after shooting at the police with his AK - 47? Hmmm. methinks NO.
Per my local news he is well known to police for "terrorist" activity and has been sent to anger management. But he's got his 2nd amendment rights and his fucking AK-47.

Did you watch the interview of the woman who talked him down? Normally I would agree with what you said however considering how careful the woman was with the gunman, how she got him to lay on the ground and totally disarm, how she told the police she was totally unharmed and the guy didn't have any weapons on him anymore, considering the demographic of the area this took place in I actually do think someone who looked like Trayvon could have possibly survived. Note I said possibly!!
What kills me is that this guy had problems. He was known to have mental health issues. He was known for "terrorist activities." He had threatened the lives of family members in the past.
Why did he have access to a gun?
That's right. His second amendment right is more important than anything or anyone else.

NOT a gun apologist in any way... but at 20, this guy should not have been able to buy an AK-47. But this is GA. And it is shockingly easy to buy a gun. My FIL gave us a Glock as a gift, and gifted my DH one of his old guns from the 70's. Yeah.... yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah. They're hidden away.

No - I am grateful she was able to do that. I just feel that this would have gone down a whole lot differently if he was AA. I wish I was wrong.
eta: I believe the police chief is AA - so maybe it would have been the same. I wonder what would have happened though if an unstable AA young adult with a "terrorist" background, known to police, with a prior arrest had busted into a predominately white private school with an AK-47 and opened fire on a predominately white police force.

Not that ANYONE NEEDS AN ASSAULT RIFLE. EVAR. *-)
A Glock or an old gun from the 70's could still kill someone, including one of your kids (if you have them) even being "hidden away." Yes, an assault rifle is "worse" than the aforementioned but I hate the mentality that a handgun is somehow an acceptable household item.

I believe in this scenario if the person was black or white they would have been shot. I also believe had this guy actually shot at the police he would have been shot. He was unarmed when they got in there, and they knew he was, which I am sure is why they didn't shoot him.
