I used to hang out around here pretty often and half-way participated in the WBC. Then I was hired for my first teaching position and got super busy and stopped reading. School's over for me now and I can read again!!! I always find that it's so hard for me to start a new book. Once I am in it, I love it and can't put it down...but I always have a hard time picking it up.
Anyway, I want to start reading again and I was thinking what better place to come to for ideas. I have The Help and have been wanting to read it...but I think the size is just daunting me right now. What book would you pick up if it has been 5months since you read for pleasure?

I think The Help will suck you in quickly -- as the others said, it's a fast read. If you want to start smaller I would go with something easy like YA or Chick Lit just to get back into the habit of reading. Something like Stephanie Perkins, John Green, Sarah Dessen, etc. YA is always easy for me to fall into so I like turning to that when I'm in a rut.
I know how you feel - the other day I was feeling so overwhelmed by everything that I picked up a Calvin and Hobbes comic book and couldn't even focus on that!
Do you enjoy re-reading? Sometimes when I don't think I can get into something new I pick up an old favorite and read that first, after which I'm more inclined to start something new.
If you're so out of practice that you think The Help is daunting, I would really recommend finding a good "100 books you must read before you die" list so that it gives you something to work off of. If The Help is daunting, you definitely need to force yourself to get back into the swing of things. Aside from reading only YA books, I think forcing yourself into a little assignment is your best way to do that.
