I had just finished my workout and was leaving the gym. As I was walking out I ran into a guy I know and we started chatting. An older man approached me and asked me if I knew who owned the car which was only a couple parking spots away. Inside in the back seat was a pomeranian (sp?) puppy. I was dying inside. The poor thing was scratching at the window.
An employee at the gym went inside and told someone at the front desk to track down the owner, meanwhile the older man called the cops in which the cop said "that is bullshit" and said he was coming over. So the cop was pissed too.
The windows were literally cracked a couple inches. I was sick to my stomach.
The one girl noticed the doors were unlocked so my friend opened the back door and the pup just lay on the seat
So, this is the best part.
Effing owner lady comes out and I ask her "is this your car" and she's like "oh my son left her in the car" blah blah blah
I'm trying to tell her it's extremely dangerous for the dog to be in the car in this heat and the lady effing says to me "well we have the windows cracked"
I tell her that it doesn't matter and she has the nerve to put her hand up in my face and tell me to not yell at her. Um, I don't yell. I'm extremely soft spoken. Maybe I was passionate in my speaking because I was concerned for the dog but in no way, shape or form was I yelling.
So she tells me there are more polite ways to tell her that her dog could have died and she hopes I don't work in customer service. What??
I'm so upset right now! She took the dog and I had to leave but she had a big enough crowd of haters around her anyway.
A person getting defensive and then deflecting by calling you out on tone of voice (or volume in this case) tells me that they know they are the asshole in the situation.

I sometimes thing people here get a little crazy about this issue. However this is crazy to me. Who in August leaves their puppy who is already a small breed (so prone to problems with heat even quicker) and who has more of the smushed in face in their car for a long enough amount of time to have a crowd gather? That is just asking for trouble. I hope that even though she got defensive it was at least embarrassing enough that she doesn't do it again.

How so? Non-snarky. I mean, it's pretty straight-forward. You can't leave your dog in the car unattended, even in mid-upper seventy degree weather, as the heat is amplified.
I am admittedly probably sensitive about it because I bring my dog with me a lot. I am also very careful about the weather, how long I leave him, etc. I just think people are sometimes quick to jump to "OMG THINK OF THE DOGS" when it is mild out. When in reality I bring my dog and know others who do because I am thinking of him. He gets sad (read that as destructive/finds ways to make up his own fun) when home alone too long and sometimes a quick ride in the car is just the stimulation he needs to be a happier dog for him and for me.
I want to add (not that this should matter because it is unacceptable no matter what) that it is 90 degrees outside today and humid. When I got in my car it was so hot I couldn't breathe.
And the owners had a small bowl of food and water in the back seat so they anticipated the dog being there a while. Not ok
You're awesome for helping that poor dog! People are such morons. Maybe next time she will think twice before leaving her dog in a hot car. We can only hope...
Did you get the license plate number of the car? In my neck of the woods animal control will mail people citations for that stuff under the right circumstances. You should call and ask them about it.
