I'm popping over from H&F to ask for advice. Our vet is closed today and I'll give them a call tomorrow but I wanted to see if you ladies had any helpful advice that I can follow sooner.
Duke, our 8 month old Chesapeake has hot spots between his toes. There's a long back story but the vet has him on antibiotics and steroids but gave us no instructions for cleaning the wounds other than a warm cloth. It's been a few days and they just don't look any better, still raw and wet. Anything else we should be doing to help the sores dry up and heal?
Is he still licking them? If he is then you just nerd to wait til the steroids do their job, our use a cone of shame. Anna went through this last fall. It didn't take too long for the steroid to take effect. Just keep them clean like your vet said. You shouldn't need to do anything else. It's just going to take time. From the location, it might be that the scabs aren't able to dry, which means they're going to take longer to heal.
Is he licking them? Our dog would do that and they wouldn't heal. We had to do the cone and some bitter spray (near the area but away from the wounds) to deter licking.
Our lab has allergies, which lead to licking, which can lead to infection/hot spots, etc. so we always seem to be dealing with some type of skin issue.
We've had good luck with NeoPreDef powder- our vet gave it to us but not sure if it's available elsewhere. It's great for treating spots in areas that are moist, but the trick is they need to be monitored after applying it to ensure they don't lick.
I see that someone else mentioned gold bond medicated, so that could be a good alternative to keep it dry.
