I guess you guys aren't seeing what I'm seeing on FB.
I'm late in responding to this, but yes, I've seen so many comments and memes on Instagram about "This is why ladies need to do squats" and "She is skinny-fat! LOLOLOL".
I just can't with the stupid squat memes anymore. "Does she even squat bro?!" Ugh!
I think my point somehow got lost. I don't care about the dancing (for the record, leaning over and shaking your ass =\= twerking), the outfit, the tongue.
I care about the fact that she's surrounding herself with hired women, the majority of whom (if not all, as was the case in this performance) are black, and using them as a way to further some image she's created for herself. While reducing them to nothing more than butts meant for slapping and grabbing on stage.
LHC posted an interesting Jezebel article yesterday.
I agree with a lot of it (like, um, don't use people as props seems like an obvious) but some of it? I'm not sure how to feel. This was one of the comments (from the article) and I think I agree with it. I don't know, doesn't it seem offensive to say, "Grills are a black people thing"?
From Jezebel: Am I the only person who thinks it would be helpful to stop defining racial boundaries in terms of clothing and dance moves and fingernails? Saying "these clothes are for black people," "these dance moves are for black people," "this manicure is for black people" is far more cringe-inducing than a pop star with bad taste.
Also, can someone explain why no one is talking about how terrible her singing was? I could have done a better job when she was singing at the beginning of Blurred Lines and I can't sing to save my life

I think it is a pretty well known fact that she is a horrible singer. But I could not get past the dance moves and outfit to concentrate on the singing.
But all the other outrage is laughable. Yes she was vulgar. Yes it was bizarre. IT WAS ALSO THE FREAKING VMAs. You are suppose to be out there and vulgar and not wear clothes. It is an award show for the younger folk.
Of course someone like me is not going to think it was not a great performance. I am 32, have two kids, and SUV and I like cardigans. I am not her audience! I do like her songs though.
That is why I find all of this commentary annoying. It is all talking heads who fall into my demographic clutching their pearls. We should also probably tell her to get off our lawn.
I mean by all means talk about the racist undertones. I think those are really good points and we should be thinking about what was going on up there.
But the foam finger, and the twerking, and the skinsuit, play on Miley. Play on.

A woman I follow on pinterest wrote an interesting article about this. She takes a very hard line about it. Here's a quote, "This woman, who has in the past been called out for her appropriation and disrespect, was an embarrassment to white people last night, evidenced most painfully when she slaps a woman of colour in the backside during her performance."
