BRIDGEPORT— An anonymous person donated a diamond engagement ring and band to St. Vincent's Medical Center, leaving the gift in front of a statue of the Virgin Mary in the hospital's chapel, officials said.
Attached was a note: "I would like to donate this ring to cancer patients. I had it appraised. My ring is worth $3300. Thanks." It was signed, "Cancer Survivor's wife," according to a news release from the hospital.
Margalie Alphonse, 47, of Bridgeport, an EKG technician, found an envelope with the gift attached to the note on June 13. The ring and band were held together with medical tape and the note was written on a piece of bandage, officials said.
Alphonse brought the package to Dr. Stuart Marcus, the hospital president, who ordered a check of security video footage in the area of the chapel. Still, authorities were unable to identify the donor.
"This person has a very big heart, and we would love to find her and say thank you, and let her know that we will put her very special gift to good use in serving cancer patients," Marcus said.
Hospital workers are calling the gift a blessing.
"The fact that she gave us something so precious to her indicates the depth of her gratitude and lets us know that our efforts to deliver the highest level of care to all patients are succeeding," Marcus added
