If you like Huggies, the Costco Kirkland brand is basically the same. They have animals on them. I believe the Target Up and Up diapers are character-free, too.
We love target's up and up. Have never had any issues with blow outs (although I may have to update after the anticipated poosplosion that may be on the horizon)

We use Huggies Snug & Dry, they have Mickey Mouse on them though.
I usually buy at Target, you can use Target coupons & manufacturer's coupons, on top of that I get 5% off with my redcard. Sometimes they also have gift card promotions for buying 2 boxes. (Often I can get them for $.15-.20/diaper)
Subscribe and save on amazon will make your life a lot easier.
Dr.Loretta-See if there is a social worker/clinic/diaper bank in your area that will accept your diapers. I donated a bunch of mine to a friend that was a social worker and she'd give them to clients. My kids always liked to move up a size right after I opened a big box.
If you have a CVS in your area, they have their huggies jean diapers on clearance. They were $3 a pack for size 3-5 at mine yesterday. They don't have any characters on them.
I didn't even attempt cloth diapers because we didn't have our own washing machine. I tried to make it work with G diapers, but it was a mess. Stressing out over killing the planet was not an ideal use of my time.
I really loved Nature Babycare diapers. I used to buy cases from Diapers.com. They are character-free and free of all the kind of stuff that irritated DD's skin. I have no idea how they compare price-wise to things on the market in the rest of the country, but the diapers.com prices were the best I found in NYC. I liked Nature Babycare a lot more than Seventh Generation.

As far as I know, the only truly character-free diapers (except for the more natural brands like Seventh Generation, etc.) are the Target brand ones. The Costco brand ones are free of commercial characters, but they do have some sort of picture on them. Animals maybe, I can't remember.
If Joseph had a problem with the Pampers with the Dry Max, you could try the Pampers Baby Dry. It doesn't have the Dry Max in it.
In my experience, Huggies (and the generics that are more like Huggies -- like Costco's Kirkland brand) work better for chubby babies. Pampers seems to work better for babies that are long and lean -- they are the only ones that don't leak for DD.
Given all that you have going on, I'd buy buy something that you can get on Amazon with Subscribe and Save so you don't have to worry about going out and buying something! That's the best price I've found for the Pampers Baby Dry.

I love Amazon b/c i don't have to buy them/drag them home, etc... and love subscribe and save (only good if your baby is in the same size for a while though).
Kirkland brand are great - i think they are = to Huggies. We also like LUVs a lot -but they are made by Pampers so you might have issues with them if you do with Pampers.
kirkland does not have any "characters" but does have animals, etc.

Target has free shipping with a $50 purchase so you can get them there. I've found them to be comparable in price to Luvs on Amazon. If you go through Ebates you get 2% cash back. And, no characters- just polka dots.
