I am totally wanting to eat healthier... ( I get scared about salmonella.) I am lazy so sometimes I get the prepacked Dole salads or prepacked indivudal salads from the grocery store. Is this really bad?? How serious are you about washing your fruits and veggies? I usually run it under tap water and rub it... not sure how effective that is.

The Organic Girl (if you're into that) is washed three times. Then a cow licks it. I kid. But, really, it's washed three times. It's not too expensive.

Sometimes I'm a lazy eater, but I've been trying to be more careful lately. I bought this stuff: www.amazon.com/Environne-Fruit-Veggie-Wash-32/dp/B001SAQO9M and you should see what's left in the water after I wash fruit & veggies. It's disgusting.
i think it's cheaper to buy my romaine and spinach separately than the pre-packaged bags. i wash it all when i get home, mix it and put it into several ziplocks w/ a paper towel and it lasts over a week. the pre-packaged salads never last that long for me.

dc, never heard of the paper towel thing, going to try that.
yeah, line a gallon bag w/ two paper towels and it absorbs any moisture. this changed my life. well, it at least allowed me to cut out a mid-week grocery trip for more lettuce.

I recently learned the paper towel trick too. I haven't tried it yet, but I am looking forward to not feeling like I have to eat the lettuce within a day after our produce delivery arrives.

I grow my own, but it's not like I have a green house with fresh salad all year round. It usually just depends. Sometimes I buy a head of lettuce and sometimes a prepackaged mix. The ones I grow are all organic, but I don't buy organic at the store.

We grow some and buy at the farmers market. The farmers market lettuce here is so cheap and so good. I love my salad spinner. The stuff in bags goes bad too quickly but I do buy the clamshells of baby spinach from Costco.
