I punched a Dr. When I was in ICU last Sept.
I had to go to to ER last night and before they put the I.V. in me they started to restrain me first which I never had happen before on my entire life.
Luckily everything turned out ok. I was terrified that I needed surgery to have my gall bladder removed (thank you WebMd) but it turned out I have swollen abdominal lymph nodes. I didn't know I had lymph nodes anywhere other than my neck.
I need to figure out how to have that taken out of my official record.

We have a flag on our charts for patients who have a history of being violent towards staff. It just shows up as a letter V next to their names when they get registered; there's no way to say "but here's the story!" without looking back through their whole record to find the incident.
But still, they shouldn't have just gone right for the restraints. They should have been prepared to need them if necessary, but even if you were someone with genuine violent tendencies, nothing escalates a situation like coming at someone hard before knowing the facts. We will generally have security on the alert if we get a flagged patient, but we don't do anything differently unless they start to show signs that we're going to have a problem. Nine times out of ten if you treat them like normal human beings ('cause you know, they are), things are fine.
I don't think they are allowed to just start using restraints like that. That's shady at any rate.
It's also illegal to restrain a patient without having exhausted all alternatives first, unless they are an immediate physical danger to themselves or someone else.

I'm sorry things have been so rough for you, Karma. I know that as a healthcare provider it is sometimes easy to get caught up in what you need to do to save a patient's life and forget that the person is scared and has emotional needs as well. But that's no excuse to behave like an asshole. I'm sorry that you've had to deal with people like that, who forget what this line of work is all about.
