In February/March they hired a new kitchen supervisor. He's a HUGE doucher. Meaning - he yells at people unmercifully, told one of the ladies she shouldn't be working there because she can't speak English (she's from an Asian country and has working here for 10 years) and made her cry, he talks down to people, and believes the servers are inferior and treats them as such. He has been talked to about his behavior, and it has improved, but he's still and ass and thinks he's God's gift to the culinary world.
ANYWAY - he hasn't been working there for six months and got a FREAKING HUGE PROMOTION today to Sous Chef. I am ticked. He's pretty much in charge of everyone except the Executive Chef. And he's salaried. I wasn't up for this promotion (nor did I want it) But......
I've been working my ASS OFF just to get a freaking title change (not even a 'real' promotion). The positions I work are the positions of five different people and those positions all pay more than my current position if my title were to change (if that makes sense) My boss (the executive chef) keeps telling me the title change/promotion are "in the works". He doesn't dish out the raises/promotions but he can recommend people for them. I've been working here for almost a year and 1/2 and I've gotten a 75 cent raise. That's it.
I don't think I'm 'better' than this guy by any means, but I certainly think I'm just as good as he is I can make/do anything he does and it tastes just as delicious!
And I should mention that this guy REALLY wants my bosses job. I dislike the way the promotion guy treats others and works so much that if he were to take my bosses job I would find another job. I would not work 'for' him - so to speak.
Am I over-reacting? Should I just get over it? I will eventually, I'm sure but I'm still cranky today!
If I wasn't pregnant I would totally be drinking a margarita right now. I've settled for a Limeade Sparkler from Taco Bell and it's freaking AMAZING. But I'm still pissed.

I don't believe you.
That's fine. Whatever.
But I wasn't. I don't want a Sous Chef position, it's not the "route" I'm on - I primarily make desserts/pastries. Sous Chef is more hot foods/banquets etc. It's more responsibility than I want.
The position I've been trying to get my title changed to is Head Pastry Chef. What is a completely different department than the Sous Chef. And I pretty much do the Head Pastry Chef job anyway since I"m the only one in the kitchen who makes the desserts/pastries.
I am not in that business, nor am I familiar with it aside from what I've seen on t.v., but all of the big chefs seem like divas/a-holes. Aside from Mario Batali. I'd marry him.

I'm sorry, btw.
For sure! You definitely have to have a HUGE personality to make it - especially on TV. I don't think I'd make it on TV, not to mention my face would breakout from all the make-up I'd have to wear! Whew!
I just don't see why you would promote someone who you've had to speak with about they way the treat co-workers and put him in charge of people when most of them have a HUGE issue with him.
I get how you're feeling but in my waitressing days, I'd never worked for a chef who wasn't a giant asshole. It's almost a requirement for being good at your job.
I had an instructor in culinary school who said he used to be an ass in the kitchen. He would tell us how once he was able to treat others with respect he went much further with his career. He was one of my favorite instructors. I'm hoping the jack-ass chef is turning into a thing from the past!
My Exec Chef I work for is AWESOME. He's great. Exact opposite from an ass hole. However...sometimes TOO nice. So - still have to have some doucher qualities.
