Is this rude? Gift addition

I'm on my phone, so I'll try to be brief. My sister is pregnant and having some complications. She is having to drive from her home in NY to the children's hospital in Philadelphia twice a week for tests. It's super stressful and I feel terrible for her. So, my other sister and I decided to buy her a little gift as a pick me up. An iPad. So, I ordered her an iPad 2, sent it to her house with a nice note - "you're doing great, hope this helps with research and gives you some entertainment during downtime, we love you, etc." She got it, sent a nice text saying thank you and thanked me again next time I talked to her on the phone. Great, yay, perfect. Until today, she asked me if she sent me $100 could she get the iPad 4. IIRC, that's not out yet? Or maybe she means the retina version? I was kind of stunned and said, um sure, but I'll cover the $100, don't worry, if that's what you want. She said she'll play with the one she has for a day or two and decide. This is really NBD, but I'm a little disappointed and maybe think I'm a dumbass for not just getting the retina one to begin with? I'm not really an apple person, so I don't know. Ugh. Thoughts?

Yeah, it's rude. I would have exchanged it on the down low, but I would have exchanged it for a newer version. (The iPad 2 was introduced early in 2011).

It seems a bit greedy, yes. I think the iPad was a really thoughtful gift on your part, so yay for you.

The iPad 2 is what I have so obviously IT IS THE BEST.

Seriously. That's what I would do too. Truth be told, I didn't get the retina because she is not exactly a power user. She's going to use it to look at fb and play candy crush. Sigh. Oh well.

I think it was rude and unnecessary. She could have just exchanged it without you knowing, but she should have just sucked it up and kept it.

I get wanting the best product that's out there but you don't do it at the expense of a gift that someone else bought you.  And if you did, the gift giver should never ever ever know about it.  Not cool.

I jusT got an iPad w/retina on Monday. I would have had no clue that it was different than the iPad2 and your sister is kind of a jerk for asking for more money to upgrade.

I'd be super pissed and tell here she was an ungrateful brat, pregnant or not.

I don't blame her for wanting to exchange it though. Apple puts out their new technology/products so fast that even the newest becomes obsolete in a couple years. I got my iPad 3 a year ago, so the 2 is pretty old. I'm kinda surprised they still sell it. It's a pain having to update the platform and having an older version means that you'll have less time to keep it up if it becomes damaged, since they'll cease to repair that version sooner than the newer versions.

See! I should have consulted ML before purchasing. Both h and I are business/finance people and therefore windows users at work, which leads us to be windows users at home too. I really should have done more research before buying. That said, the only options for buying on apple's website were the 2 and the retina version, which appeared to be the 2 with better display. Ok well. Thanks for the feedback everyone

Rude. Are you sure you got the 2 and not the 3 off of the Apple Store? Because really, Candy Crush does not need a retina display. She just thinks she needs it, when truly in a year and a half, this kid is going to be using the thing more than her. Truth.

Ah, just moseyed over to the Apple Store to see what was up - looks like the 3 was just phased out and it is just the 2 and iPad w/Retina Display (4). Still rude and makes her come off as ungrateful even though I'm sure she's not! I wish I had sisters like you!

In my immediate family this wouldn't really be a big deal at all, but outside of immediate family yeah, rude. The thing is with Apple as someone else said they turn products over so fast that the 2 won't be able to use all the apps etc in like a year and a half. They usually support things for three years. It was came out in 2011, so in a year she may not be able to update the OS and use all the apps. That's an expensive gift to only be able to fully use for a year. Yes, you can still use it, but my original ipad has struggled for awhile and it's not because it's broken, it just can't keep up. That said, she could have just brought it to the store and upgraded it herself, she doesn't need you or a receipt or anything (that's what I did when I won an older ipod in college right after a newer model had come out), though if she's used it you may not be able to return it. It usually needs to be unused.

It's a little rude. If it were my sister it wouldn't really bother me because we're super-close, and I would understand her not being able to facilitate the exchange herself if she was pregnant with complications and really busy driving to Philly twice a week. So yeah, I wouldn't bat an eyelash if it was my sister. Not sure what your relationship with your sister is like, but if you're giving her an iPad to begin with then you're probably pretty close.

Anyone other than my sister, mom, or husband, and I would have probably dropped the phone if I heard that on the other end.

The point isn't if the technology would be obsolete. The point is she got her sister an expensive and sweet gift and her sister was very rude about upgrading it. She could have been nicer and had it upgraded by someone else, like her SO.

Yeah, I'm disappointed about the whole thing. I bought it spontaneously, during work, and spent about 5 mins researching, so that's my fault. She should have been more gracious, but I honestly am not that surprised. She did say "hope you're not mad" - lol. It's just kind of annoying that 100% of the fun has been sucked out of the gift giving.

FTR, I sent her a new one this morning. <------- SUCKER.
