H's aunt gave us this tooth brush that lights up and blinks when you press in the end. DD (she's 2) loves it and actually likes getting her teeth brushed. At least for now.
We say things like "Oh my gosh! Is that a T-rex in there? We'd better get him out!" Or an excavator or alligator...you get the picture. "How'd that get in there? Get out of there, T-rex!"
You try to make it fun in any/every way you can think of (let them pick their toothbrush, sing a special song while you brush for them, etc), you talk to them about sugar bugs and how important it is that we keep our teeth clean (yeah, they probably won't understand, but sometimes it does work), and if all else fails you just brush through the screaming. Eventually they do learn that it's going to happen whether they throw a fit or not.
We have a fun toothbrush and train toothpaste. I let him do it and he just sucks off the toothpaste.
I pin him down and try to hold his mouth open. I do it becuase its my job, but I can't pretend its fun for anyone.
this was me. Until I had a brainstorm one day and told rocco I thought I saw an excavator in there. Now he plays along with that and rarely fights me anymore. It's awesome.
I'm not a dentist, but I'm a dental assistant. I transferred to the front desk area about a month ago, but before that I spent the majority of my day working with young kids and I still can't believe the number of parents who aren't willing to force their kids to brush their teeth.
