Same. I'd try on the few things in store at Kohls to figure out the sizing, then go home and order online. Kohls always has some sort of 15/20/30% off coupon, so it wasn't too expensive. A lot of my basic came from Old Navy online... Jeans, tees, tanks.
Old Navy is doing 25% off maternity clothes right now (through 9/11), so I'm going to a store this weekend, and may order things online then too. Even if it's not great, I don't have a problem with $20 pants or shirts.
The first time around I bought an entire wardrobe from ON because they shipped to my APO. This time, since I had the option of shopping in stores, I got a lot of things from Burlington and TJs.
Check eBay and if there are any consignment stores near you that carry maternity. I got a bunch from a friend this time (that is done with kids and doesn't want them back) and plan to just give most of mine away now, too.

I didn't do a lot of actual maternity but what I did was old navy and target. I had two summer babies so wide leg linen pants and tank top/cardigan combo + maxi dresses were my go to.
Just wanted to add my experience that Motherhood stuff suuuucked for me. The shirts would fit so well the first two or three times and then completely fall apart. The ruching would fall out and then the bottom would be all uneven. No exaggeration, this happened to at least five shirts from that brand!
I bought a few Old Navy pieces. Read the reviews though. A lot of things didn't fit true to size and dresses often didn't hit on the body how they were pictured online. If you are short, and things come in short length, buy it! I did buy Motherhood Maternity for dress pants for work. I bought a couple pairs each pregnancy and they survived pretty well with multiple washings. Their shirts do suck though.
Sears has pretty cheap maternity stuff. It isn't the "cutest," but you can find a few plain pieces cheap.
For some basics check Walmart on-line. My favorite jeans were actually from there and I got good wear out of their tops. Site-to-store shipping is free.
Kohls here have eliminated their maternity section (as my sister found by checking several nearby.). I was surprised that my local Targets have replaced all but one rack of maternity clothes with a plus size section. I assume that type of selection would vary in different stores though.
My sister ended up getting most things hand-me-down.

Kohl's in-store is pretty bad, but they have decent stuff on-line.
