Ok this COULD be that they're offering you to up your policy by $15k/take out an additional policy for $15k without having to go through the medical screening again. The $12, I assume, would be the annual fee for that policy addition. We don't have insurance through this company - we go through State Farm - but they will offer these options every so often as well. My FIL, SMIL, BIL, H's uncle, and H's grandfather are all agents so we usually have a direct line to answer any questions we have - my H is the black sheep who didn't get into insurance, haha - but regardless, I'd definitely call on Monday and get your questions answered.
Oh wait! This is allegedly through your union?? I've had the same thing happen through my union. It is not necessary to buy this extra coverage. This is a legit offer but it's a separate deal and they get really pushy and imply that you "need" this extra coverage.
I wouldn't sweat it. Call your union on Monday and get the skinny on what this is really about before yo call the insurance company.

Yes, it states that the $12 will be part of the annual fee. That would make sense. I just wish they'd send a letter with it explaining what the payment stub is for and if it is optional or not.
It's frustrating because I'm unable to access my account even though I have all the info needed to access my account (they keep saying I typed in something incorrect). I was thinking that there would be more information under my account about this.
Insurance stuff is the worst! As soon as you said NEA I knew it'd be through your union. I always had trouble with my NEA login stuff too. And, yes, they are only on the phone lines M-F even though most other insurances 800 number would work on the weekends as well. But don't worry about it - there's a long time until October 1st so as long as you call Monday or Tuesday this week and get it figured out I wouldn't spend any more of your weekend thinking about it

And yes, they get REALLY pushy. We didn't add anything through the school insurance other than the super cheap $3/mo offer (or whatever) for $50k coverage because we were already covered with SF. They kept hassling me and I just continued to ignore them. Eventually they stopped. They were extremely confused why I wouldn't take out their special "cancer insurance" even when I explained to them that if I saved the monthly premium myself I would have the amount of their payout within 5 years. All insurance is playing the "what if" game. They'll use any scary scenario they can to convince you that you NEED what they're selling, even if you already have some form of coverage.

I wonder if it would be easier to just add the life insurance through the same provider we have (USAA) for our auto/home/valuable insurance even though it may cost a bit more? I've only had insurance with NEA for about 2 months and I'm already frustrated.
Thanks, glad to know other people are having trouble too!
It could be! You'd be paying for "convenience" but that isn't always a bad thing. I always went through SF even though the school one was cheaper. But for the $500k policy that we took out, I think SF was cheaper (if NEA even offered coverage that high?). If you want to switch, sooner rather than later is better. The older you get (among many other things that can change in a year) the more expensive your life insurance will be. Plus if you have some sort of complication with your pregnancy or birth between now and a year from now, that could really increase your premium if you don't start with USAA until next summer.
