My nephew LOVED Planes. He's 2.5,and sat through the entire movie and was really well behaved. The only time he made noise was when he no longer wanted his snack and gave it back to SIL.
There were also a lot of other little kids in the theater and it was actually not half bad.
My three year old cannot sit through a movie. Even one he loves like Despicable Me. But I do know some who can put a bucket of popcorn in front of their kids and they're good to go. I'd say it depends on the kid, if they're a real jitter bug or a mellow marshmallow.

We took D to see Despicable Me and she LOVED it. She sat on my lap the entire time but she wasn't restless at all. She's 2.5 and won't sit in front of the tv for longer than 20 minutes at home.
David could not at that age. We tried when my friend had a movie birthday party at a theater. He lasted *maybe* fifteen minutes. He's almost five and can barely last an entire movie, but he can manage it.

DD always behaved better for other people and would've been fine going with someone else. I took her at 2.5, but ended up having to leave before the end of the movie. But it was a really long movie and they had a bunch of previews and a short movie before the movie actually started.
Dd did great in the 1st movie (despicable me 2) and horrible in the next one (planes) but she's younger than your dd. Payne saw Cars 2 at a little over 2.5 and was an enthralled little church mouse.
C has been to many movies and loves it. (Just turned 2) a few months ago we took her and a friend a month younger to despicable me 2. It was his first movie. They were both absolutely enthralled w it. It was a great balance of music and action. C gets a little bored during planes or cars unless its a race scene.
It depends on the kid. I personally would not take my 2 1/2 year old son to a movie yet. He has a short attention span/lots of energy and would likely be whining or trying to run around during the movie.
DS was about that age for his first one. Other than not liking the loudness, he did great. I agree though, it depend on the kid. But give it a shot! Just don't be the jerk that won't take the kid out if they can't handle it.
What's the worst that can happen? They have to leave a bit early?
She could start screaming. Then they have to leave. Then his kid starts screaming because he doesn't want to leave. Then they get kicked out. Then the kids run around screaming in different directions while the poor guy is rocking in a corner.
I would pass. I think for a first movie you need a parent-kid ratio of 1:1.

"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"
That's about when DS started going. He loved it and was quiet but had to get up to use the bathroom and take a move around break twice each movie. His first movie was one of those Disney Nature flicks with all the live animals. He was much more into those than cartoons at that age. The first movie he sat all the way through was Toy Story 3, when he was four and a half years old.
ETA: But I agree that at 2.5 years old, you really need 1:1 supervision.
