My cat is the same.
They said he could come home if his heart rate would stabilize. His elevated heart rate and pulse makes them think he has an underlining heart issue.
They says they could keep him for as long as we need (but I'm sure I can't afford that) and we'd talk about all the options when I visit him tonight.
The vet didn't mention putting him to sleep but I got the feeling that's what "my other option" is.
The vet says in these cases, you never know what's going to happen. My cat could get better eventually or he could not. And he could wait it out at home if his heart rate would stabilize.
UPDATE: I put him to sleep. After hearing what the vet had to say, I knew it was the best thing. Afterwards, the vet confirmed he thought I was making the right choice. Made me feel better.
I held him while he passed and gave him lots of love.

I've been looking up what my cat has (thromboembolism) and I think it's making my decision easier. Even if he were to make it through this, the chances of it happening again are 90% and most die within 180 days of initial treatment.
But I'll confirm what I read with the vet before making any final decisions.
