We are visiting inlaws in florida next week....they are about an hour from orlando. We are doing harry potter world thursday but have the rest of the weekend free. Not looking to do disney or another theme park...but hoping to suggest another outing. They moved there about a year ago so still getting used to everything.
i be typing from me phone. typos and grammer dont count.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
I used to have to go for work quite a bit and a trip to Orlando was not complete without a trip to the outlet malls and a meal at Johnnie's Hideaway www.yelp.com/biz/johnnies-hideaway-orlando-2

Which way from Orlando are they? To the east you have Kennedy Space Center, and the ocean beach; to the west is Tampa-St Pete area, and the Gulf beach; to the northeast is Daytona Beach. All are within ~ 2 hours of Orlando.

Kissimmee is nearby Orlando- we had a lot of fun with Boggy Creek Airboat tours there. We got discount tickets at the visitor center on International Drive.

You can stroll around Winter Park (lots of restaurants, bars, boutiques) and take the Scenic Boat Tour to see some beautiful houses on the Winter Park chain of lakes.
The Villages? My In Laws have a place there - it's amazing! Trust - there is plenty of entertainment without even leaving :-) (If that's where they are)

Kennedy Space Center is worth a trip, I think.
My grandparents bought a place there to retire to in the late 70s, back when it was Orange Blossom Gardens and it had one nine-hole golf course and one clubhouse with a pool. It's changed a bit since then!

We recently went to visit friends and didn't do a theme park. We did the Lego Imagination Center at Downtown Disney, a character breakfast at one of the resorts, and the World's Largest McDonalds (which I don't necessarily recommend although our 3 year old did love it). The Orlando Science Center looks great, but we didn't have time to fit it in. I'm not sure if you have kids and these are all obviously kids activities.
We loved Kennedy space Center! The annual membership was worth it to buy for one person. Parking was free, 10% off of admission, food, and gift shop as a result. One of my boys has Aspergers and loves space. He met an astronaut and cried when he saw Atlantis.
We also did Gatorland. My kids loved there as well.
