SS: My family just calls it Sweet Potatoes, even though it's the Candied Yam/Casserole dish. My family is from Northwestern WA.
ETA: Also, it depends on who makes the dish that year, but whether it is made with yams or sweet potatoes (and marshmallows/sugar) it's ALWAYS called Sweet Potatoes, nothing more.
Candied yams is something very different. You basically peel the Yams/Sweet Potatoes (yes I know those are different things but set that aside), then cook them to death in butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, etc.
EDIT: I grew up in Georgia with parents from Georgia and South Carolina.

To me sweet potato casserole and candied yams are completely different. We make the sweet potato casserole every Thanksgiving, but it is souffled sweet potatoes/yams with a topping of brown sugar and walnuts. Candied yams (in my mind) are just sliced yams with syrup and marshmallows on top. A big fan of the former, not at all a fan of the latter.
I'm originally from Minnesota - but growing up we never had either the casserole or yams. We had rutabaga. And it was disgusting.
