Anyone have some tips for traveling overnight with a dog (beside some of the more obvious ones). We are looking to take our 13 lb terrier mix along on some 4-5 hr road trips with a overnight stays in a hotel. We plan to crate him in the room while out. He dose travel well in the car, but has never been crated anywhere except home. The kennel is not an option, since we did try that and he had an awful time.
Will he be OK in a crate alone in a weird room? (ie not barking or howling) You could try covering it with a blanket to try and make him feel better about being away from home. Put bones/toys/blanket in to keep him busy.
We travel often with our dogs. We give them water at potty stops, but they don't always want it. Unless needed, we wait to feed them until were done traveling for the day. I don't want vomit in the car in case they might get carsick!
In the hotel, we keep TV on during the day and a fan on at night. It helps drown out any noise our neighbors might make bumping around in the rooms next to us or in the hall.
That's about all I can think of at the moment(that isn't obvious). We are a military family, so we have moving with our 3 dogs and 2 cats down pretty well, but every animal is different.
I'd also try listening outside your hotel room for a few minutes and see how he does after hearing you leave. So you can see if he's going to pitch a fit or bark.
You may want to check the hotel's policy because all of the pet friendly ones that I've stayed at don't allow you to leave the dog unattended in the room, even if it's in a crate.
And a lot of hotels have a doggy package that you can request upon check in now. The Westin and the Fairmont will bring up a dog bed, bowls and a few treats.

You don't want to come back to irritated people!
Yeah this. Our dog has stayed in hotels more often than some people because of flyball and agility tournaments. I think a lot of people leave their dogs alone thinking they're quiet - they're not. We can't leave our dog in the room alone, he has to come and stay in the car.
