I colored my hair at home 2 days ago to cover my insane amount of gray hair in my dark brown, almost black hair. I used a Garnier nutrisse box color for the first time and I didn't leave it in long enough so my grays didn't take the color fully. It doesn't look hideous but it's definitely noticeable if you bother to look even a little bit. So basically I need to do it again but I don't want to damage my hair.
So... How long should I wait to redo it? What should I do to help my hair in the meantime? Should I redo it with a semi permanent color that might be more gentle? Any other suggestion? I don't want my hair to break off at the roots!
I grabbed the Olia line(permanent color) yesterday at Target thinking it may be more gentle if I have to redo it. I just washed it again for the first time and used the special condiditioner that comes with the box. I don't usually put conditioner on my roots but I did this time since that's the part that will be exposed to color again. My hair is going to be so greasy by the end of the day.
I used to use the wella Koleston line from beauty supply stores and then I got lazy so I started using the Garnier Olia line. Then I got cheap and I grabbed the regular Garnier line this time. I feel like my hair has gotten drier since I started using the box color, but that could be my imagination. Maybe Garnier just isn't my at home box color brand.
A semi permanent color won't cover your gray. It may blend it a bit, but after a few washes they'll be showing through again. I would suggest buying another box of the same color that you used, only apply to your regrowth area where the gray is, and leave it on the full amount of time. Permanent color needs 30-40 minutes to penetrate gray.

Amen. Same product, full process time, just the roots. You don't need to wait any amount of time, you can recolor immediately. Your worry about excessive damage is unfounded; just treat the gray and you're fine.

I have a ton of grey, and I have just started using the Age Beautiful line by Zotos. It is true to color, covers my resistant grey well, and the color lasts.

Cool. It's sold at sally's? I also have access to a beauty supply store via my aunt, that's where I got my Wella from.

I colored my hair yesterday with Ion hair color from Sally's. I've used them in the past and have been pleased. I've also used L'oreal hair color from Sally's.
