I find Stephen King is the worst for that. Always writes an amazing story with a cool premise and them realizes he is at page 400 and needs to wrap it up. Unless he writes a short story. Somehow, they seem to work out.
I didn't like the last chapter of Mockingjay for this very reason. I felt it was too rushed and there was too much left out (to say it without spoilers).

This I agree with. Major let down.
I hadn't really put that into words, but it totally makes sense. Such a good story, but that was kind of rushed.

The last chapter of Mockingjay?? The entire 2nd half of that book made absolutely no sense! She kept tossing the characters into illogical situations for the sake of 'finishing the book'... I had so many issues with how she ended that series. Way too many loose ends that were never explained, characters not following their previously established personalities, killing off characters when it was unnecessary (and made no sense why they were in that situation), etc. That book was a real letdown.
I felt this way about War and Peace. To the extent that I had to skim the last ~100 pages they were so frustrating after having enjoyed the rest of the book.

This was Life of Pi for me. The last couple of chapters ruined the whole book. I was so interested until the end, and it was awful. I think it's my least favorite book ever just because I was so let down by the awful ending.

I totally agree. I just mentioned the last chapter specifically because so much happened that left the reader with nothing but a huge WTF. I actually went back and read that chapter again, thinking i must have missed something. Nope. I hope the movie makes it better or the audience will walk out feeling cheated.

This is exactly how I felt! I really liked book 2 but the end of the series was a huge letdown. Kind of ruined the whole thing for me. Especially the way they killed off one if my favorite characters so quickly. Im interested to see if they can do it better for the movies.

Yes! 11/22/63 is like this. Such a fantastic book all the way through until the very end. It's just so un-believable. I find it annoying that he did such a great job with the whole book up until the last 50 pages or so.
Ditto Stephen King being a culprit with this. He has a lot of good story ideas, but the man can't end books worth a damn. I think the best thing every about the movie adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption is that someone else re-wrote a very mediocre ending and made it kick some ass.

That would explain why I don't remember the end of that story. I loved the movie, but the I can't really recall the book, or what may have been changed. I think I need to read it again, just to refresh.
I was so pissed at the end of My Sister's Keeper it was comical. I refuse to read any more of her books for this reason.
I agree about My Sister's Keeper. It was shocking and abrasive, but not in a 'this all makes sense' kind of way. Even when I put on my 'deus ex machina' hat, it still doesn't add up since it doesn't relate to a tragic flaw.
I did like the twist in motive from the younger sister though.

I have to second toriwc about HP, though.
Completely agree. At least it didn't take long to move through them though. that could have made it more painful.
Yes! The author can completely ruin a really good book that way.
The last book I read with this problem was Geraldine Brooks's Year of Wonders. The ending was so off the wall and unrelated to the central plot. What the heck was she thinking?!

I totally agree with this. I remember being so pissed with the end of this book and telling DH that it made me hate the book. It is such a huge letdown when this happens.
I was thinking the same thing about Stephen King. I've read probably 85% of his books, but can only think of half a dozen endings that didn't feel slapped together or made sense. And yet I keep reading them for the other 800 pages at least the dark tower series had a fitting end. After 7 books I would have been pretty irritated!

Completely! I loved, loved, loved "It", until the very end. It's like he had painted himself into a corner, and didn't know how to get out, so blamed it on "aliens". Really???

I'm a huge Stephen King fan, but he can definitely ruin an ending.

This also happened with Under the Dome. He got the end and it was almost like he didn't know how to finish it so he made up something random. I still loved the book, though.
