A friend of mine is moving from England to Oregon (not sure what city) for a job. She wants to know how much she should budget for food (for 2 adults) each week or month so she can figure out how much rent she can afford. She and her BF are mostly vegetarians. I know this really varies but any advice for her?
Without knowing where she's going, it's hard to answer, but for two adults I'd say $400/month on the low end, probably more in the winter. We have access to fantastic local produce for cheap in late summer, so that helps.
Corvallis would probably be a little cheaper than where I am (Portland), and since it's pretty much sitting in the center of Oregon's agricultural universe, I would hope that would help make awesome produce easier and cheaper to come by.
Is her new job at the university? I love OSU--such a great yet underrated school.
You might want to page hamster over on MM--I think she lives in that area and can probably speak more intelligently to their grocery prices.

Sorry, all I know is that my cousin-in-law worked at a vegetarian restaurant in Corvallis. They provided the food at her wedding, and there were a bunch of hippies doing a drum circle thing instead of dancing with the dj. Her veg ways will fit in fine.

We spend about $350/month for two adults outside of Portland. Though I do shop at Winco (with the regular folk) rather than at New Seasons (with the yuppies).
